Italian geographically, Mediterranean in climate but with an identity all its own– that’s Sardinia. Honeymoons here are slowly gaining popularity for those who want something distinctive and special, just like the island itself.

If you’re one of those who are looking for a getaway to wonderful, mysterious Sardinia – honeymoon, wedding or just a vacation - you’ll certainly find it not just romantic but fascinating as well.

Here are some legends and traditions that surround the island. Atlantis

Among the most interesting legends about the island is that it’s actually the lost island of Atlantis! According to legend, Atlantis was an island with an extraordinarily mild climate, rich in metals and with many towers, but which was suddenly abandoned around 178-1175; all these things, say some archaeological scholars, are a perfect match for Sardinia! Honeymoons in what could possibly be the lost city of Atlantis could certainly add an element of intrigue! Explore the ancient nuraghi and you just might discover clues to the ancient city-island.

Olive branches, friendship and love

Another island legend revolves around the pagan festivals of midsummer. On the feast day of San Giovanni Battista (St. John the Baptist), numerous bonfires were lit, and townspeople had to jump through these fires made from olive leaves and branches in order to purify the soul. Legend also has it that if the branches popped or crackled as a pair jumped, the friendship, engagement or marriage was true and would last forever. For newlyweds in Sardinia, honeymoons should include an attempt at this strange ritual of true love. Wedding Traditions

Weddings (even those that are just re-enactments) are among the best occasions for newlyweds to witness the ancient and timeless traditions of the island. The island’s charming setting and spectacular views simply add to the quaint customs of the locals.

One of these wonderful traditions is the yearly re-enactment of ancient wedding traditions. Centuries old-wedding rites are acted out and visitors can get a first-hand experience of how marriage vows were made in the old days. In times gone by the event began with the groom driving an oxcart to the church while the bride walked alongside, but this has changed through the centuries with the bride riding with the groom in the cart.

In Selargius, there is an event called ‘Sa Coja Antiga’ or Selargino wedding. Here, two couples, often one local and one foreign, recite their vows and make promises to their future children. Everything is written down in the traditional dialect on a parchment to be presented to the children in later years. The Blessing

The "breaking of the plate" is perhaps one of the most important wedding traditions of the island. The wedding feast cannot begin until this is done! The plate is filled with five important items: grain (for abundance), salt (wisdom), rose petals (caring), candy (sweetness), and money (wealth). It is then broken and its contents thrown onto the bride and groom as a blessing. The ritual is carried out three times on the wedding day: before the bride leaves for the church, as the newly-married couple exit the church, and when the couple arrives at the reception.
