The water supply in WA is being strained by constant development and population growth. Moreover, the arid weather and little rainfall exacerbates the situation. In 2001, sprinkler rosters were introduced for scheme and bore water users to help with water conservation. This initiative was made permanent across WA in 2007 to assist water efficiency measures. Currently 4.5 billion litres of water is saved every year due to the implementation of sprinkler rosters.

Summer Sprinkler Roster

There are specific restrictions for both the Summer and Winter months. Summer restrictions apply from 1 September to 31 May. During the summer, scheme and domestic bore users are limited to a 2 day a week, whereas domestic bore only users are allowed an additional sprinkler day. Watering days are determined by the street number so be sure to check the roster to know which days you’re allowed to turn on the sprinklers. Be aware that sprinklers are only to be used once between 6pm and 9am on watering days. Users can make the most out of their watering days by watering the plants in the morning rather than at night, as it lets the water soak into the roots and provide water for the rest of the day. Watering during the night may lead to fungal growth, as the water may pool due to less evaporation happening. Property owners can also try reducing their irrigation by 2 mins to save more water in the long run.

Winter Sprinkler Switch-Off

The winter sprinkler switch-off is applicable from 1 June to 31 August. During these months, sprinkler use is not allowed, regardless of whether the property owner utilizes a scheme or bore system. However, this ban does not apply to irrigation systems that use water collected in rainwater tanks, and hand watering is still allowed. This sprinkler switch-off was first introduced in 2010 is an effective permanent water-saving initiative to accumulate more water for the drier summer months. Less evaporation happens during winter due to less sunlight and colder temperatures which means that the rain provides sufficient water for gardens and lawns to be healthy.

New Lawns and Reticulation Tests

If you’re setting up a new lawn, you can apply for an exemption to the sprinkler roster to allow for the lawn to be established. If granted between 1 October and 31 March, you will be allowed to water your lawn 3 times a day for 42 days, but only for 35 days if granted during 1 April to 30 September. You are allowed to run irrigation tests but only in the presence of a professional and to a maximum of 2 minutes per station. Clear and appropriate signage must be displayed to indicate that tests are being run.
