The Benefits of Not Procrastinating

Do you ever look at that class assignment and decide to go for the party first and come back to it later? Or are you the kind of person who waits for the last day to finish that office assignment? Well, this is called procrastination, and it is the worst habit that you can cultivate for yourself. The saddest thing about procrastination is that people spend so much time doing it that it becomes almost their second nature, and the result is failing to achieve lots of things that were within their reach. Here are benefits that you get when you ditch this bad habit.

You discover your potential

If you want to know what you have the ability and capacity to do, whether manual, academic, at work and in terms of talent, you have to stop procrastinating. When you postpone activities, you find distractions to fill the time created, and as a result, you go on to forget your goals and dreams. Slowly, you forget the importance of holding yourself accountable, achieving the milestones that you had in mind and succeeding in general. You get time to analyze your journey and strategize for success.

You make an impact on others

People like it when others use their gifts and talents to enrich their lives. When you stop procrastinating, people learn that you can be relied on and they come to trust you. They help you grow your talents by practicing with and on their platform, which helps you become better and touches their lives in a positive manner.

You accomplish your goals

Think about something as little as getting your assignment finished on time. It might seem nice to go to the party first and have some good time with friends, but a late assignment means asking for an extension, losing marks and even having to do the work in a hurry so that you can meet a certain deadline. These may seem like easy and laughable parts of the student’s life, but they end up in a lower GPA, which means struggling to get to the college of your choice or getting qualifications for the course of your dreams. In the bigger picture, therefore, procrastination costs you your dreams and makes you settle for less than what you deserved.

Get out of a rut and move on to other things

The other great thing about not procrastinating is that if you are stuck in a situation which seems to have gone on forever, you get the chance to make a sound strategy and move out of the mess. When you keep postponing the action, you are only piling the problem, which eventually makes it worse. It would, therefore, be best to get one aspect of the project completed followed by another and so on till everything is complete. For instance, think about a situation where Christmas is coming up, and you have not prepared anything. If you start with buying the groceries, followed by the presents, and then take the kids to see Santa, you will even have time to create a lighted Christmas tree before the 25th. In short, when you clear one goal, you create space and time to work on other things, which eventually leads to even greater success.

The ultimate benefit which comes from getting over the habit of procrastinating is that with time, you become a better manager of your time and completing tasks as soon as they are assigned to you becomes second nature. This is a trait that you will find really useful in the corporate environment, and in a world where partying, social media and other time-wasting activities are over-glorified, you may actually have a very easy time climbing to the top. They say it takes 21 days to make a habit, and it also takes 21 to break it. For the next three weeks, make sure you do an assignment as soon as you get it, within three weeks, you will have started a behavioral pattern.
