Types of Diamonds used for Yellow Diamond Engagement Rings

When it comes to colours, denominations can be deceiving. Everyone has a set idea in their head of what constitutes ‘yellow’, for example, but most people will not differentiate between the different shades of yellow, allowing for them all to be lumped under that vague ‘umbrella’ category.

With diamonds and other precious stones, the situation is no different. As with the colour itself (or most colours, for that matter, except black), yellow diamonds come in a variety of shades. So it helps to be aware of what "type" of yellow you’re buying when you’re looking for a yellow diamond engagement ring. Below is a list of all the main shades of yellow diamond to help you with this task.

Fancy Vivid Yellow

This is the boldest shade of yellow diamond engagement ring you can get, a sharp, crisp, glowing mid-day sunlight kind of yellow. This is all the rage nowadays, as people are breaking from the traditional clear diamond mould. The brightness of the yellow owes a debt of gratitude to intense exposure to nitrogen. In short, you can’t really fake this kind of hue unless you’ve got a few hundred million years to spare and an underground volcanic cavern to hand.

Fancy Intense Yellow

Now, despite the name, the yellow present inside this diamond is not nearly as intense as the Vivid. The intense is actually a far more subtle yellow, perhaps easier on the eye, you might say. But still strong enough to capture a room’s attention when you walk in to announce your engagement to the love of your life with a dazzling yellow diamond engagement ring.

Fancy Yellow

As we slide down the scale, there is a noticeable reduction in yellow. This is a more watered down shade, a pale golden tint, the colour of champagne.

Fancy Light Yellow

Again, we’re getting pretty pale now. This yellow diamond hasn’t been on holiday to the Med recently. But it’s proud of that. The Fancy Light maintains a soft, neutral, radiating beauty as comforting as a nightlight.

Y-Z, W-X, U-V, S-T

These diamonds are all of a similar, more subtle yellow. A peep of yellow here, a whiff of yellow there. No brilliance or glaring sunshine, just subtlety. These are however caught in the awkward no-man’s land between pristine "perfect" clear diamonds and wondrous bold colour. If you want that compromise for your yellow diamond engagement ring, then look no further!
