Four Common Types of Pens

We spend most of our day staring at a computer screen or a smartphone screen. These devices have made written communication easy with the help of emails, text messages or web based messaging services. In spite of that, people in large numbers still prefer to use a pen to write on paper or other writing surfaces. This short blog talks about four of the most common types of pens.

Ball Pens –This type of pen is the most commonly used pen by people in offices, educational institutes, factories, shops, and homes. The most important part of such a pen is a small ball at the writing tip, which is usually made of a metal like steel, brass or tungsten carbide. This ball is usually free to rotate, and this motion helps to distribute the ink on the writing surface. Ball pens are of the use-and-throw variety, and also are refillable.

Gel Pens – The main difference of a gel pen and a ball pen is that the ink is usually in the form of a suspended pigment instead of being completely liquid. This makes the mark on the writing surface much darker. On the other hand, gel pens use up greater quantities of ink, which requires quicker refills or replacement.

Fountain Pens –This is the oldest type of pen that is still in use today, although the popularity has dipped due to certain problems in usage, and the appearance of a number of alternatives. It has a metal nib (sometimes made of solid gold) and there is an internal reservoir to hold the ink.

Sketch Pens – Technically these pens are more of drawing instruments than writing instruments. When used by children, they are mostly used for colouring of drawings, underlining or highlighting specific parts of their answer scripts or textbooks, or sometimes even to write in scenarios where coloured text is needed.
