Old Mahabalipuram Road Or Rajiv Gandhi Salai is the IT corridor of Chennai. It is 45 km long starts Madhya Kailash Temple Junction on Sardar Patel Road in south-east Chennai and terminates on EastCoast Road near Mamallapuram. Prominent Government Institutes and technical/ educational institutions likeChennai Mathematical Institute are also situated along the Corridor. Besides, Small Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu Ltd (SIPCOT) has developed a Cyber City, spread over 2000 acres in Siruseri. There are currently about 70,000 people employed in the IT and BPO companies along this corridor alone.

Developments in OMR:

In its first attempt to decongest the busy road and ensure traffic flow is smooth, the corporation has put the process of land acquisition on the fast track, and the second phase, for road widening between Siruseri and Mamallapuram, is now in its final stages. Officials of TNRDC say they will, if the Election Commission permits, float a tender on Tuesday for a detailed project report on the feasibility of an elevated expressway from Taramani to Mahabalipuram.

The government plans to invest Rs 5 crore on the study which will also look at the possibility of a bus rapid transit system (BRTS) on the road to Mahabalipuram. The study is likely to take a year and the expressway could take more than five years to be built after that. It is expected that around 13,000 PCUs (passenger car units) pass Tidel Park every day. Study is conducted to understand When the road is widened and expressway is built it will be able to support twice as many vehicles. The study will predict the growth of vehicular population and analyse the current traffic. Based on this, it will suggest where it would be ideal to have exits from the elevated expressway. Based on a study on the possible efficacy of a series of grade separators along OMR, the first 22km of the expressway, from Taramani to Siruseri, will cost at least Rs 1,500 crore.

Thoraipakkam-Pallavaram radial road:

This road will connect to GST road (Pallavaram) directly. People can reach pallavaram in 10 minutes from Thoraipakkam (OMR). There is toll gate which charges for usage of the road. The 14 KM road will be extended to East Coast Road (ECR) to connect the south to east.

Vandalur Kelambakkam road: The 18 km distance road connects Vandalur in GST road to Kelambakkam in OMR. This stretch will also get first phase of Monorail which will connect Vandalur to Velachery including Tambaram.

This first phase spans almost 23 km and covers stations such as Perungalathur, Tambaram East, Selaiyur Camp Road, Sembakkam, Medavakkam, Pallikaranai etc. Major IT companies have their huge presence in this road.

Some more projects in the pipeline are link roads between Rajiv Gandhi Road and ECR at Neelankarai and Palavakkam estimated to cost Rs.100 crore.

The other link roads are from the stretch of Maraimalai Adigai Bridge-Irumbuliyur Road at Medavakkam to Karapakkam on Rajiv Gandhi Road.

Connecting ECR and OMR will help between east–west connectivity. All the links that on the roads are from north to south and development too is happening in that direction. With east west connectivity, development that is perpendicular to the two roads will happen.

Apartments, villas price will soar in OMR as new developments will attract not only IT companies but also SMEs which are in GST serving Ford. It will provide good connectivity to the other parts of city.
