It’s Modi Style in the Fashion World

Of late, Indian men have become very choosy about how they present themselves during grand occasions and ceremonies. Wearing kurta-pajamas and sherwanis was the trend earlier. This style has now been taken over by the trend set by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Modi’s half-sleeved kurtas are the rage in the state now. Though the style has been around for a while in North India, this fashion wave hit the south only recently.

Modi is not the first Prime Minister to set a fashion trend. It was Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru who first did it with his ‘Nehru jackets’. These jackets were very popular during the 1950s and 60s.

But the Nehru jacket fad ended within just a few years. The jacket soon became outdated and was associated more with ageing men.

In fashion, however, what is considered outdated by one generation becomes trendy for another. Since the Lok Sabha elections, the dressing style of Indian men had literally changed to these jackets and the old trend has now come back. Modi’s half-sleeved kurta teamed with Nehru jacket with fitted-pajama offers the pure ‘desi’ look and is yet fashionable. Today, this fashion wave has hit the entire country and that is the reason why this great combination is preferred by many during special occasions. Young fashion conscious men from Malabar region have also started following the new style.

These closed-neck, coat-like garment is usually considered as court dress for the Indian nobility. The jackets are made from a wide variety of materials such as plain cotton and wool, brocade, vinyl, velvet and sharkskin. The pants are similar to western style with one pleat, two pleats or without pleats. The pocket of the trouser may be side or slant.

The Nehru jacket is not very different from a suit jacket. Unlike the normal collar, this jacket resembles the suit jacket very closely. It can have single or double vents, and its collar is attached with the help of a hook, which altogether gives a clean look. These jackets are mostly worn with matching trousers and pajamas, but it can also be paired with odd knickers.

The jacket will look best when worn with a collarless shirt than a shirt, since the collarless shirt can give it a sleek and uncluttered look. The jacket with long full-sleeved kurta and matching pajamas will give a more elegant look.

Punjabi juttis and Rajasthani juttis are more suitable with these dressing styles. For a change, slide on shoes of brown or black colours, which can also be good enough. With ample number of shops in the state and online stores offering a plethora of these jackets, these are no longer old-fashioned.
