There are many reasons to visit Iceland - Northern Lights sightings, glaciers and geysers are the most popular, however they are just the beginning. This fascinating country has a rich cultural heritage and exquisite local cuisine that many visitors may not initially be aware of. The unique opportunity for whale watching as well as a visit to Iceland’s Blue Lagoon and the Golden Circle should all make it on to an action packed itinerary.

Find the Experts

Most excursions in Iceland - Northern Lights viewing and whale watching included - are most rewarding if led by an expert guide. Finding optimal locations for viewing the lights is completely dependent on knowing the right times and places for the best viewing conditions. Local guides can help navigate the often rugged terrain via super jeep to find fairly remote and isolated spots, which will improve your chances of seeing the Aurora Borealis without the glare of city artificial lighting and with the benefit of crystal clear skies.

When visiting Iceland, Northern Lights may be top of the list, but whale watching should come a very close second. Knowledgeable tour guides, who can also provide great insight in the marine life of the country, lead whale watching tours in both summer and winter. While of course there can be no 100% guarantee that whales will be seen during a tour, these guides can still provide a very interesting and informative excursion all while viewing the stunning coastline.

Natural Wonders

Being a volcanic island, the country's geography and terrain is full of magnificent natural wonders. One of the most popular visitor activities in Iceland (Northern Lights excluded) is touring what is known as the Golden Circle Highlights. Generally, this encompasses three major sites just outside of Reykjavik; the Pingvellir Rift Valley, Gullfoss Waterfall and the Strokur Geyser, which faithfully erupts every 5-10 minutes. Collectively, these three geological wonders are breath-taking and a wonderful example of the riches the country has to offer.

Finally after hunting the lights and navigating the coastline in search of whales, visitors can relax in the healing geothermic waters of the legendary Blue Lagoon. The lagoon’s water is exceptionally pure and rich in in minerals, which are said to be good for the skin and overall health. It is a unique experience to relax in one of the saunas or steam rooms carved into the lava, and then enjoy a fabulous meal at one of the excellent restaurants overlooking the clear blue waters of the lagoon.
