IATF 16949 Major Components

IATF 16949 defines the Quality Management System (QMS) requirements for the design and development, production, and services of automotive-related products. The focus of this automotive IATF 16949 is the development of a QMS that provides for continual improvement that aligns with automotive quality management systems. IATF 16949:2016 is also fully aligned with the structure and requirements of ISO 9001:2015 that helps to maintain quality in the product and services.?Some of the members listed under IATF 16949 are:

The standard is divided into ten sections for you to easily understand and put into action. – The first three are introductory sections, and the remaining seven contains requirements for the Quality Management System which are described below:

SECTION 4: CONTEXTAs stated an organization must assess in formulating and implementing a QMS that may impact the mission of an organization positively. Anyone seeking to have an IATF 16949 certification could impact its mission to address the desires and demands of all parties by

  • Determining what capabilities, support, and investment will be needed.
  • Determining, monitoring, and reviewing external and internal issues
  • Determining, monitor and review relevant interested parties
  • Establish the quality management system plans and policies
  • Determine processes needed for the expected outputs by sequencing responsibilities, risks, and opportunities

SECTION 5: LEADERSHIPTop management is required to demonstrate leadership and commitment to establish and communicate a quality policy, and delegate responsibilities and authorities duly by:

  • Implement the process approach
  • Provide the necessary support to sustain the QMS
  • Engage, direct, and support individuals contributing to healthy management process
  • Create a culture of continual improvement and maintain documents

SECTION 6: PLANNINGThe planning section defines requirements for preventive actions, addressing risks and opportunities and quality objectives and plans to achieve them by:

  • Adding risk-based thinking
  • Planning actions to the QMS are made
  • Updating the QMS for maintaining ongoing process and opportunities

SECTION 7: SUPPORTThis section deals with the requirements for supporting processes and resources. This helps for maintaining and providing a healthy work environment, monitoring and measuring resources, communication, and documented information by:

  • Calibrating or verifying monitoring and measuring resources
  • Determining and maintaining organizational knowledge
  • Measuring the type and suitability of resources

SECTION 8: OPERATIONThis section includes requirements on planning, product requirements, and controlling the equipment used to monitor and measure the product or service (Design and development, external providers, nonconforming outputs).

  • Establishing operational processes for resulting product/service suitability
  • An assessment of required resources to achieve the stated goal
  • Meeting product/service prerequisites
  • Meeting logistics requirements

SECTION 9: PERFORMANCE EVALUATIONThis section includes requirements for monitoring the effectiveness of the QMS established for manufacturing processes by

  • Conducting internal audits, and management review
  • Determine what, how, when results will be measured
  • Determine the methods for reviewing customer satisfaction
  • The difference in previous and present statistical data

SECTION 10: IMPROVEMENTThe last section focuses on continual improvement, take action against nonconformities and implement corrective actions by

  • Determining and selecting opportunities for improvement
  • React to nonconformities and take corrective actions

These sections are based on a Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle to drive and maintain improvements within the processes. IATF 16949 Certification is a standard that benefits businesses, in the long run, ensuring your business's cost savings and efficiencies.
