With the globe reeling under the pandemic crisis and restricting all our daily routine spaces like offices, market places, restaurants, parks, gyms, swimming pools, sports arenas, stadiums and theaters. Moreover, all our outdoor activities have also come to a screeching halt. The people have been forcefully pinned to the couch or imprisoned inside four walls of their houses. The most affected are the kids with no friends around and no sports complexes open, they have been glued to the sofa, TV, laptops and mobile. This is such a tough situation even for the parents to tackle as they don’t have an excuse to get the kids off the sofa and become active again. They cant ask or force them to shut down their mobiles or laptops and go out to play. This has become a great problem not only for the parents but also for the kids. They are becoming more obese, too much screen time and even after that boredom from doing the same thing over and over again. Getting the kids out of this state and making them do something activity in the restricted spaces and environment is a challenge in itself. It's a challenge but not impossible and a few ideas that could be picked up from some creative parents could prove even a good activity and mood changer for the adults too.

Spending time and giving them fun activities to be performed at home can give them good physical movement and the required amount of activity to protect them from the health hazards of being attached to their digital platforms. Every child needs to move and keep moving to keep up not only his sleep time but also for the development of his cognitive abilities and his overall attitude towards life.

Preschool kids need at least 180 minutes of physical activity in a day to remain mentally and physically healthy. Kids between the age of 5-17 need about 60 minutes of mild to moderate exercise a day.

Keeping the kids involved active and energetic is the added responsibility of the parents as the kids are under their supervision 24X7 with the lack of school, friends and other sporting activities. Below are some interesting activities that can be done with kids to keep them bustling and burning the required calories in a day.

  • Freeze dance is a simple activity where kids who like to dance can dance to a tune and freeze when the DJ stops the music and the one who could not spot being penalized with some other activity or the one who freezes correctly being rewarded.
  • Learn new dance moves from Youtube, with Youtube providing step by step version or DIY (DO IT YOURSELF) version of every activity you like. This way the child gets their screen time along with physical movement.
  • Volleyball with the balloon and with yarn tied from chair to chair as the net can be another easy and fun game in restricted spaces and spaces with fragile objects around. Kicking and heading the balloon should be allowed to make it more fun.
  • Make story-time reading a game, by doing an activity for a repeated word that comes in the book. Doing 5 jumping jacks for each "good (as a word)" that appears in the book while reading, can be a fun activity.
  • Hallway soccer or broomstick hockey with a goal made from masking tape on the floor and plastic balls as a soccer ball and broomsticks and a tennis ball for hockey.
Get creative and make your children do some activity even in the restricted and fragile spaces of your home. Exercise or any such kind of physical activity is of great importance.
