To ensure optimum service life of a gasket, it is not only important to choose the right gasket material but also to install and maintain it properly. The gasket material used should be as thin as possible and in good condition. Bolting and installation are the two key factors which affect the final working of the processes. They play an important role in the smooth functioning of the process where the gaskets are used. In case the gasket is not installed properly, then the following problems may occur:

  • Immediate leakage on the start of process
  • Leakage after a short period of operation
  • Leakage within few hours or days
Main causes of gasket failure
  • Excessive or uneven stress distribution over the gasket
  • Loss of stress because of relaxation in the gasket or bolts
  • Chemical attack on the gasket by any external media
To prevent gasket failure, it is important to ensure the following points:
  • Fit the gasket by checking flange alignment, surface finish and the entire bolt tightening procedure.
  • Check flange finish and the applied bolt load. Also, review the gasket type and material used in manufacturing that gasket.
  • Check the chemical compatibility of the gasket with the external media and with the temperature of the process.
Gasket Installation Procedure
  • It is important to ensure that the nuts and bolts are clean. It is also necessary to apply bolt lubricant to the bolt and nut threads.
  • Hardened flat washers should be used in order to ensure even transfer of the load.
  • The gasket should be installed centrally and the bolts should be tightened using a controlled method such as tension.
  • After installation, it is important to check that the flange faces are parallel using a suitable tool.
Apart from the procedure, there are some points which must be considered:
  • Mating flanges should be of the same type and must be correctly aligned.
  • Fasteners should be selected properly in order to ensure that they do not exceed their elastic limit during tension.
  • It is important to ensure that the fasteners show no signs of corrosion as it may affect their load bearing capacity.
  • Gaskets should be stored in a cool dry place, away from heat and direct sunlight. They must be stored flat and not hung on hooks.
