Choosing a Dog Breeder

There is nothing quite as charming as a Labrador retriever puppy, and though this breed was originally designed as a working dog, more and more American families have found that they make the perfect companion dogs. The downside of this recent popularity, however, is that backyard breeders have sprung up all over the place, and when someone is looking for Labrador puppies for sale in California, some care must be taken.

First, make sure that the breeder's credentials are good. The animals that he or she breeds should be pedigreed, and they should have been in the business of breeding dogs for at least a few years. Be willing to contact people who have purchased dogs from the breeder before, and ask them about the animals that they have purchased. Are the dogs healthy and happy?

Remember that Labrador retrievers are prone to certain health issues. For instance, this breed is prone to have hip dysplasia, a painful condition that does not show up until adulthood. A good breeder makes sure that the dogs that she breeds are tested for this condition early on to prevent them from passing it on to their puppies.

Do not purchase from a breeder who will not allow buyers onto her property. A breeder should be willing to show off the parents of the puppies and the places where the puppies have been living. Someone who wants to hide these things is someone who has something to hide! The puppies might be receiving poor care, something that will impact their health as they get older.

Another thing to remember is that a good breeder tends to keep puppies until they are between two to three months old. Anyone who lets puppies go much sooner is doing the puppy a disservice, as a lot of a puppy's later calmness and behavior derives from how long it was allowed to spend with its mother. However, a good breeder will also let you come visit the puppy that you have chosen as often as you like.

Typically, a good breeder will check out the people who are adopting their dogs. They will ask questions about the kind of home the adopter keeps, and they will make sure that people know what kind of care a Labrador retriever requires. After all, a Labrador retriever is a large dog that requires specialized care.

Finding the right dog takes some time, but consider finding the right breeder first!
