All of us know the term walkie talkie. We have either used them, or seen people walking around talking into this radio device. These devices were developed around 1937 and were mainly used in the armed forces during the Second World War. Over the years, walkie talkies have wriggled their way into a lot of fields and are even a part of a lot of houses for communication between the family members.

The most important factor to consider when buying a handie talkie is its range. The range is the maximum distance the transmitter and the receiver can be placed for them to still work with clarity. The range depends on a lot of factors including the power of the device, obstructions including walls, buildings, vehicles, trees etc. and the length of the antenna.

This devices working on say 0.5 Watt can probably cover a distance of a few hundreds of meters. Those devices with 6-7 Watt power can reach up to 4 km. This is the average connectivity of walkie talkies in India and all those brands that boast of ranges as high as 15 km measure them with both the transmitter and the receiver at line of sight with no interferences in between. Hence be aware before trusting such numbers without checking them out.

While talking about the frequency of a walkie talkie, there are 2 basic differences that can be seen.

  1. Ultra High Frequency (UHF)
  2. Very High Frequency (VHF)

Ultra high range are the most popular category as they are shorter waves, getting easier penetration through interferences like walls, wooden surfaces and other obstructions.

As the name suggests, Very high frequency devices can cover a larger distance and when there is no interference between the transmitter and the receiver, they can work much better than an UFH device. VHFs are great for outdoor communication with clear line of sight.

UHFs offer the below advantages when compared to VHF

They are much smaller and compact when compared to VHFs as VHFs require a larger body, a longer antenna and bigger battery packs

  • They are the best suited models for indoors. They can penetrate walls and other structures effectively when compared to VHFs

For e.g. A 2 Watt UHF device will provide better coverage indoors when compared to a 5 Watt VHF device. Hence it is wise to analyze what the requirement is before opting for a handie talkie.

This device offers much easier communication costing only a fraction of what a mobile phone will cost you. A popular brand of walkie talkie, the TalkPRO, offers UHF frequency range for all its 4 models and is best suited for a variety of fields. They promise hassle free crystal clear voice reception walkie talkie at a great price.

Imagine an industrial area with several employees working at the same time. The industry is located well outside the reach of mobile network towers. In this case an UFH walkie talkie can be a great help to reach between people located in several areas inside the building and offer clear, hassle free communication with just a press of a button. There can also be different groups made so that each group can communicate with each other with utmost privacy.
