Nontraditional thinking is required to make e-commerce succeed. Often, the older the business practices within an industry, the more difficult it will be to overcome industry inertia. At the same time, the traditional practices may include more process inefficiencies—the elimination of which could produce tremendous cost savings that could jolt traditional players out of their old ways of doing business.

In the future, Pfizer's drugs will move through the development process even faster. Pfizer's researchers now use the Web to search libraries of niet online payment technical data and collaborate on new drug development. So Pfizer is continuing its efforts to use the Internet to eliminate sources of the costly delay in its drug development process.

Before an e-commerce application "goes live," it is essential that the front- and back-end systems are integrated and tested. While Cisco experimented with several e-commerce applications, its front- and back-end systems were fully integrated and tested before Cisco began to use CCO for live customers. Most companies are very reluctant to deploy an e-commerce system if there is a perceived risk that system flaws will undermine customer relationships that the company has cultivated over a long period.

Another example of this from Information Week is the Compumotor division of manufacturer Parker Hannifin. Compumotor's "extranet" for handling orders for industrial automation system products was used by customers beginning in December 1998.

E-Steel, backed by outside investors, is a more typical independent industry marketplace, such as PlasticsNet in the plastics industry. E-Steel is more ambitious than its competitors, aiming to create a market for all kinds of steel products, not simply surplus inventory.

The extranet was delayed by an entire year to deal with response time, server upgrade, and integration challenges. Compumotor's IS manager Bud Parer noted that setting up e-commerce is not easy or fast. Parer found that performance and scalability were the biggest issues. Since Compumotor decided to use the extranet to operate its business, the company decided to delay deployment of the system until it had acceptable response time and accurate data. Compumotor's extranet handles orders for 12,500 products, warranty and nonwarranty repair-status queries, and many other transactions online payment niet from sixty-five distributors, thirty-five factory representatives, twenty direct customers, and fifty internal employees.

To improve performance, Compumotor upgraded its Hewlett-Packard server, and moved part of its Oracle database to a Sun Microsystems UltraSparc server to share the load. Compumotor devoted four worker-months to designing and integrating the extranet applications' Active Server pages, with 90 percent of the coding time spent on data availability and accuracy. Parer made all this additional effort because he was reluctant to make guesses in light of the central importance of the extranet to running Compumotor's business.
