Does a winter break in Morzine sound appealing? This delightful resort in the French Alps is extremely appealing and is becoming more and more popular with ski enthusiasts looking for a short, or extended, winter holiday.

When one speaks of winter, what images come to mind? Snowmen, turkey, Christmas pudding, hanging around ever-hopefully (if usually fruitlessly) under the mistletoe, presents, drinking too much on New Year’s Eve and then regretting it for several days afterwards – they may all feature prominently. Unfortunately, they’re also only a small part of the story and run for just a few days. In fact, the reality of much of the colder months is dark mornings, dark afternoons, freezing winds, travel chaos, endless rain (with some sleet and ice as a variation) and 24/7 dark grey skies.

If that sounds all-too-familiar you might be tempted to consider getting away from it all for a while. That’s where a winter break in Morzine can be just the remedy.

Morzine – an Alpine retreat

The resort of Morzine sits in the high French Alps in the area known as the "Haute-Savoie". You can drive to your winter break in Morzine or fly via airports such as Geneva, Chambery, Grenoble and Lyon. It’s part of a huge skiing area that crosses the French and Swiss borders and which provides some of the best all-round skiing in the world. If you’re not into skiing there are plenty of other winter sports you can participate in (e.g. snowboarding), or if you’re not into snow sports you can simply enjoy the breath-taking Alpine scenery whilst sampling the local Savoyard cuisine.Winter in the high Alps is a very different prospect to that typically found in the UK. You’ll see snow instead of sleet and hail and often there'll be blue skies instead of grey doom-laden ones full of rain. The hotels and catered chalets here are of typically very high quality (though of course, use your discretion when choosing one), and you’ll be able to experience a very comfortable, relaxing and festive hospitality.

When to visit

The season in the Alps runs pretty much into April – if you’re looking for snow and related attractions, that is. In fact, once spring and summer arrives, the charm of the area doesn’t vanish - it simply transforms itself. That’s because this area is a delight for things like walking, riding, canoeing, fishing and cycling.

If you are planning a winter escape, though, as you might expect, Christmas, the New Year and Easter are all amongst the busier times of the year when you’ll need to move fast in advance if you want to secure the best accommodation and locations. There is also a period around February when many schools take a break and that week or two can also be busy. If you’re not tied to school holidays, you may find some great deals on offer outside of those peak periods.

So, before you dive into the doldrums of a bleak few months in the UK, consider a winter break in Morzine to set you up for the rest of the year.
