Saying one has to be rich to be a motivate others is like saying money can buy everything—which it can't and never could. While money does denote power and influence, a motivational speaker need not be rich to have this kind of effect on his or her audiences. A motivational speaker's ability to influence and inspire through his or her words has nothing to do with amount of money he or she has in the bank or the kind of money he or she makes from speaking endeavors because a good motivational speaker is honed through experience and the quality of a speech largely depends on his or her ability to deliver a talk that creates an impact strong enough to make audiences change for the better, help the cope with their grief, and make sense of life in general. Instead of looking at how flashy a motivational speaker's car and clothes are, or spending all your assembly budget just to afford his or her fee, look at the kind of impact the speaker makes on his past audiences and spend more time knowing his story, which is a far better indicator of his ability to impress change on your students or employees.

One of the first things you should know about a candidate speaker is his identity, other things like their expertise, years of experience, and areas of interest should follow shortly after. Sitting down with your candidate speaker is important to make sure you have all these details down before even thinking to hire.

Passion plays a big role in motivational speaking. Motivational speakers who lack passion in what they do will struggle to instill change in their audiences. For a motivational speaker to effectively change the perception of his audience, he must have a strong passion not only for what he is talking about, but for the people he is talking to, and for life, success, and work in general.

Choose a motivational speaker who has gone through many life-changing experiences in life. These types of experiences are great real-life examples that they can take from as they make their point throughout their speeches. Motivational speakers aren't necessarily dollar-rich. They are people who have had rich life experiences that they are passionate to share to others so that they too, can learn from them and improve their lives because of them.
