What Audiences Want from Good Motivational Speakers

We've all seen our fair share of good and bad motivational speakers, and while quality gauges for good and bad motivational speaking can be highly subjective, there are certain generalizations that can be pulled from what audiences typically want and expect from an entertaining, engaging, and truly motivational speaker. The following are only some of the most common things audiences look for in a good keynote, inspirational, and motivational speaker:

  • A deep connection to the topic at hand – While passion does get a long way when it comes to motivational speaking, it is not enough to compel an audience to initiate the change they know they need to make. Speakers, therefore, must also have an enduring reason as to why they are passionate about a certain subject, so that they can pass this deep passion onto audiences and push them to action. While passion alone can be moving, the best way to ensure a lasting impact on an audience is to instill in them the reason for the vision and the passion the speaker has.
  • The ability to facilitate effective communication – Effective communication, especially when speaking in front of an audience, isn't all about good articulation and confidence to face a sea of discerning and expectant listeners. In motivational speaking it is more about knowing when to speak and what to say, thus, having the right words at the right time and knowing when to keep silent when there is nothing else to be said. It is easy to ramble on and get lost in the moment when all eyes are on you (the speaker). Practicing restraint and knowing when to hit the brakes are crucial to effective and impactful speaking.
  • Context – Audiences also look for context and relevance. The most impactful messages for them are those that hit them right where they need to. Motivational techniques, good rapport, and sound material are nothing without context and relevance, which is why it is always important to know exactly what the audiences want and need to hear to make an impact.
  • Other things to remember include creating a clear message to be passed on to the audience, finding ways to move them, using positive language and approaches to compel them to change, and having a clear and relevant message context that they can't ignore and will remember well after they make the necessary change.
