For those who are passionate about observing wildlife, Europe has a wealth of fantastic locations on offer. In terms of bear watching, Finland is a popular choice for nature enthusiasts, with the Martinselkosen Wilds Centre quickly becoming one of the most renowned retreats for the purpose. Its location makes it an ideal choice for those keen on observing the interaction of majestic Brown Bears, in very close proximity. Read on to discover more about this amazing experience. Martinselkosen Wilds Centre

When it comes to bear watching, Finland's Martinselkosen Wilds Centre is one of the best facilities in the country. Located beyond the lush taiga forest, in a 6000-hectare nature reserve, those interested in history may enjoy the fact that the centre was originally used as a border guard station before its incarnation as a wildlife reserve.

The Martinselkosen Centre benefits from its position adjacent to the amazing taiga forests, which can be found across the Russian border. With its small human population and dense vegetation, Martinselkosen is in the prime position for catching a glimpse of large carnivores such as Brown Bears, Wolves, Wolverines and Lynx.

Birdlife of Martinselkosen

For lovers of avian wildlife, Martinselkosen offers even more than its exciting facilities for bear watching. Finland has a large array of birdlife, so much of which even a short, relaxed forest walk can reveal. Whether you explore the surrounding small lakes within the forest or keep your eyes fixed firmly upward, you'll have an excellent chance of seeing some wonderful avian species, including the Black-throated Diver, Rustic Bunting, Siberian Jay, Honey Buzzard, Common Buzzard, Osprey, Sparrowhawk, Merlin, Hobby, Whooper Swans, Goosanders, Common Cranes, Redpoll, Scarlet Rosefinch, Parrot Crossbill, and many more.

The Bear Hide

With the ever-expanding human population comes the unfortunate contraction of the population of the majestic Brown Bear, making the Martinselkosen an even more treasured location for bear watching. Finland shares a border with Russia, from where many of the bears travel, so the Martinselkosen bear hide is in an excellent position. It attracts great numbers of Brown Bears from far and wide with its baiting programme throughout the summer.

The pleasant walk to the hide along the undulating forest trail provides some exciting first glimpses into nearby Brown Bear activity, such as their favourite scratching/rubbing trees, large tracks and devastated anthills. In fact, the bear hide has become so well known to the Brown Bear community that large groups of the animals will often congregate together, making an enthralling experience for onlookers. It is only when large males approach that the peaceful union is threatened, revealing a telling glimpse into the hierarchy of the Brown Bears.

24 Hour Light

During Finland’s high summer months, wildlife enthusiasts will enjoy continuous daylight, allowing for maximised opportunities for bear watching. Finland’s Kainuu region lies just south of the Arctic Circle, which is what creates this natural weather phenomena - a wonderful added element for any visitor. As bear hide visits are usually an overnight experience, the daylight makes for an even greater chance to sight some exciting wildlife.
