Kia Motors America introduced the 2016 Rio sedan and the 5-door at the Chicago Auto Show in February. These entry-level subcompacts are perfect for college students, commuters and others who want to enjoy lots of convenient features without breaking the bank. Both cars should go on sale by April with several updates.

The Rio's interior has a luxurious look and feel, with more space than the 2015 model. The black bumper and fog lights now have horizontal chrome accents. The fog lights look wider and more angular than in the 2015 Rio, and the headlamps point inward for a more dramatic, modern look. The taillamps are slightly smaller, and the rear reflectors have been moved to the far corners of the car. The new grille has a mesh pattern that looks similar to the grilles on the Kia Optima and the Kia Soul. Two new exterior paint colors are also available: Urban Blue and Digital Yellow. All of these changes give the 2016 Kia Rio a sportier feel.

The company also increased the amount of high-density foam in the A and B pillars for a smoother, quieter ride. The A pillars or posts support the roof at the windshield. The B pillars, which are behind the front doors, support the rear doors as well as the roof. The 138 horsepower, four-cylinder engine remains unchanged.

The features that come with the Rio stay mostly the same in 2016. You can still choose between three trim levels: LX, EX, or SX. The LX comes with crank windows and manual door locks, but you still get lots of other features. These include air conditioning, SiriusXM satellite radio, power steering, USB and auxiliary audio jacks, as well as audio controls on the steering wheel. The Power package adds keyless entry, power windows, and power door locks.

The EX comes with power windows, cruise control, keyless entry, and a tilt steering wheel. The Eco Package contains a stop-start system and an Active Eco System for more fuel efficient driving. For 2016, Kia upgraded it to include a backup camera and its updated UVO eServices telematics system for hands-free communication. Choose the new Designer package for a black cloth interior with gray leatherette upholstery and gray stitching on the steering wheel, center console armrest and shifter. You also get padded gray door panel inserts.

The top-of-the-line SX also comes with 17-inch aluminum wheels, a sport-tuned suspension, a leather steering wheel, a backup camera, push-button start, leather seats, heated front seats, a sunroof, and an upgraded navigation system with SiriusXM Traffic. If you choose an automatic transmission with any trim level, Bluetooth is standard as well.
