Looking frumpy, dazed and tired all the time hardly garners friends. A colleague of mine, new to the job, always came in like there was a mountain sitting on his shoulders. If I didn’t know better, I’d say he dressed-up every evening to look like a zombie, with the pale skin and the bags under his eyes. Sometimes, he was so irritable we jokingly called him the Hulk. He looked increasingly miserable as days passed by and the subtle alienation from everyone in the office was hardly helping.

Not much we could do, when he wasn’t tired, he was frustrated, when he wasn’t frustrated, he looked like he sleep-walked to work. His attitude didn’t help his cause and soon everyone was calling him names and cracking jokes at his expense. Sometimes, the poor guy looked that he was close to tears that we tried our level best to understand what was bothering him.

Turns out, there was a cause to all his misery and it was serious. This guy had lived by the early-to-bed and early-to-rise motto all his life. He was one of those irritating guys who were bright-eyed and bushy-tailed at the crack of dawn.

And he was working the night-shift.

My knowing, worldly-wise psychology major friend immediately diagnosed him, identifying that he was suffering from Shift Work sleep disorder. He just didn’t seem to adjust working the night-shift and was in no position to change jobs. It was costing him his health. This guy was gaunt and looked weak, he lacked appetite or even interest in food, causing his blood-sugar and blood-pressure levels to drop.

So we staged an intervention. We convinced him to leave behind that suffering-in-silence persona and go see a doctor. After a token argument, he did. I’m told that the doctor took one look at him and prescribed Provigil for sleep disorder.

Our resident Hulk returned to being Dr. Banner in a matter of days. Apparently, Provigil works. Provigil kept him awake and alert at work but he confided that it helped him sleep better when he did go to bed. He no longer felt restless and frustrated when he was trying to sleep and he didn’t feel drowsy and tired trying to stay awake. Provigil helped him adjust to the night-shift lifestyle smoothly. His appetite returned; he was eating healthy, cracking jokes like a regular comedian and being generally charming.

Apparently, a lot was hidden under that zombie exterior.

He’s a popular guy these days, always holding court during break-time, smiling and friendly. It’s surprising just how much lack of sleep can affect a person. It came very close to breaking him. He was dangerously on the edge of depression and trying to hold on for dear life.

Provigil helped him stay awake and get better sleep, ensuring that he had a regular, healthy sleep-cycle in keeping with the demands of work.

All it took to end all that misery was a pill that cost $0.62 online. He stepped into the doctor’s office, got his prescription, went online and purchased a new lease on life.
