The EHIC (European Health Insurance Card) should be seen as an essential item to take with you when you travel in Europe. It entitles you to state healthcare in any EEA country to the same standard as received by residents in the country. Here are some checks to make before and after filling out your EHIC form.

Is the Site Genuine?

Unfortunately, many fake sites have cropped up in recent years. These take advantage of innocent travellers by charging a fee to order the card, but it's important to remember that the card is always free from the NHS website in the UK. If anyone charges you for it, they will be doing nothing other than sending off your application. You do not need to pay anything, as it is completely free on the official NHS site.

Can You Use It in Your Destination?

Once you've filled in the EHIC form, check whether you can use it where you are going. The card is for use in EEA countries only, so if you are going to go anywhere outside of Europe, it will not be valid. If you are unsure if your country is covered, check on the NHS site, where you will find a list of countries.

What Is Not Covered in Your Destination?

The card provides state healthcare up to the same standard as residents of the country you are in. But the exact level of care will differ. For example, some countries will not provide free dental care on the state, and in others you may have to pay to see a doctor or to receive a prescription. Every country is different, so find out exactly what is covered before you go to avoid any surprises.

Can You Expect Any Problems?

There have been reports of people encountering problems in some countries when trying to use their cards. Find out about these by doing some research about recent problems in your chosen destination so that you can better prepare yourself if necessary. Some people have reported that they had to pay to receive treatment, or that they had to sign a form that actually said they were receiving private treatment. These things can happen, so go prepared. It is also a good idea to take travel insurance in case you encounter any difficulties.

Is It Valid?

This one is only an issue if you filled out your EHIC form a long time ago. If so, check whether your card is still valid before you go away, and order a new card if you need one.

Always take your EHIC when going abroad to another European country. Simply fill out the EHIC form well in advance of your trip, or check that your current card is still valid. But remember that you should also take out travel insurance because it typically covers far more and can give you even more peace of mind.
