Taking an EHIC with you when you go to Europe is a very good idea. This free card will entitle you to the same level of state healthcare as received by residents of the country. If you are about to fill in your EHIC form, here are some answers to common questions.

How Do I Apply?

Go to the NHS website to apply for your card. You can apply online by filling out the EHIC form, and this is the quickest option. Alternatively, apply by phone. Your card will then be sent to you in the post.

Do I Need My Own Card?

Everyone needs their own card when they go to Europe. This includes you and any children who may be going with you.

How Do I Spot Fake Websites?

The best way to avoid fake websites is to go directly to the NHS website, where you can apply for your card by filling out the EHIC form. If a website asks you for a fee, you know that you are not in the right place. Websites may look official, but check the address if you are unsure and this will reveal whether it is the official NHS site or not.

Which Countries Is It Valid In?

The card is valid in any country in the EEA, including Switzerland. However, it is only valid for short trips, and it is not valid if you go to live in a country or to work or study. The card is also not valid if you travel specifically to have treatment abroad.

Does the Card Always Provide Free Healthcare?

The card covers medical treatment to the same level as received by residents of the country, so this does not include private healthcare. In addition, many countries still charge something towards the cost of treatment and you may therefore have to pay towards your care. You may have to pay for a prescription, dental treatment or other treatment, so check the rules in the country you are visiting.

Does It Take the Place of Travel Insurance?

Travel insurance is very different. Private insurance covers the cost of your medical treatment anywhere, even in private hospitals, and often up to millions of pounds. It also covers many other potential problems including cancellation, missed departure, personal belongings and more. So while the EHIC is well worth taking, it is not the same as travel insurance.

Get Your Card Today

If you have not yet got your card, you can order one today by visiting the NHS website and filling in the EHIC form. It's easy to do, it won't take long and then you can travel to Europe knowing that you can use it if you get ill or have an accident. Just be aware of the limitations, and don't use it in place of travel insurance. Taking insurance is optional, but it may give you more peace of mind when you travel.
