If you like to be prepared, then owning a gift closet is the perfect solution for all of your shopping needs.

When it comes to holidays, birthdays and other occasions, it can sometimes be difficult to get a gift for an upcoming event, especially if you didn't know the event was occurring. Other times, you may not have the extra money to go out and buy a special gift.

Stocking your gift closet with items to prepare for these situations will not only put your mind at ease, but it will put your wallet at ease as well.

Creating a gift closet doesn't have to be a difficult thing. There are several key items that you can add to your closet to start things off for the next upcoming event you’re ready to prepare for.

Clothing and Shoes

Clothing is a great item to add to a gift closet, because for the most part, once you reach a certain age, you stop growing. If you’re buying a piece of clothing for a spouse or family member, you generally have a good idea of what size they wear, especially if you’re the one doing the laundry. When it comes to shoes, these sizes are almost always permanent, so these items are great to buy and store for later.

If you’re putting clothing in a gift closet for a younger child, try to buy ahead of their size. For example, if you’re shopping a sale and you’re buying an item in April for Christmas, shop for the season that comes after Christmas - spring. This will prevent you from buying clothes that either won’t fit or something that does fit, but the child won’t have long enough to enjoy it.

Beauty and Health Items

Unfortunately, beauty and health items do have expiration dates, but if you are planning to give them as gifts within the next year, it’s probably okay to store away for a later date.

Skin care items, lotions, fragrances - these gifts are great for anyone in your life who uses these things. Not only do they wind up saving the recipient a lot of money, because they tend to be quite costly, but they’re also considered necessity items. Instead of getting put on a shelf or given away in a donation box, the person receiving the gift will actually use it.

You should be careful when buying these items though. If someone only uses a specific brand item, don’t buy them anything else. Most individuals are loyal to their brands and do not stray to another, so be sure to stick with a brand that you know.

Toys

Toys are a nice addition for the gift closet, but must be chosen carefully. When it comes to older children, they tend to be a bit pickier when they are adding toys to their birthday or Christmas lists. For example, older children want the newest and latest gadgets available; young teens only want the latest tech-gadgets available.

Unless the item is something that has no plans to upgrade any time soon, such as headphones, speakers, or the newest video game systems, then it shouldn’t be purchased unless the upcoming event is within the next month or so.

Buying toys for younger children can be done at any time and stocked in the closet for whenever you choose to use it. Babies and toddlers are fairly entertained with any kind of toy, so, like clothing, buying for the next phase of their lives will make everyone happy.

Stocking a gift closet doesn’t have to be done all at once; it can be done throughout the year. If you don’t want to miss a sale, but feel like it’s too early in the year to shop for Christmas or an upcoming birthday, keep the tips in mind on successfully stocking your gift closet. When the holiday rush comes around, you’ll be snug at home with your gifts already bought!
