Plus Size Line Shegul Is Making Stylish, Sophisticated, And High End Fashion And Here's Why That's Refreshing

You live for professional, well-tailored, and stylish #GirlBoss style for your corporate gig, and perfectly structured and stylish pieces made with quality materials to anchor your off-the-clock wardrobe. If you’re plus size, this might seem easier said than done; but New York-based plus size line Shegul is here to provide you the stuff of your minimalist-leaning, sophisticated dreams at mid-range prices that won’t have you totally draining your savings account.

After working for Maiyet, an indie luxury label with a cult following, and hearing her curvier plus size friends complain about the lack of higher end clothing with a similar aesthetic that they — and she — craved, Aysegul Ilter founded Shegul in 2014. "During my entire tenure [at Maiyet], I couldn’t buy a single item of clothing because they were not made to fit curves and because I couldn’t fit into any of their standard sizes," Ilter told Refinery 29. "I only was able to wear a Maiyet dress once to an occasion during my four years at the brand. And even that required some pins, belts, and last minute adjustments."

That won’t be a problem for the customers size 12-24 anymore, since Shegul is catering to them specifically. The fall/winter ‘15 collection is full of divine dresses is silhouettes that range from flowy to structured, silky maxi skirts, tailored essential shirts and wrap dresses, cocoon coats with menswear sensibilities, feminine silk tops with an athletic-inspired edge, and the perfect ankle-zip pants. It’s glaringly obvious that care and talent were used when designing this line to create a cohesive wardrobe that plays on basics that can transition perfectly for many aesthetics and occasions.

Luxury brands and shops like minimalist plus size line Mei Smith or Mynt 1792 seem to be popping up at a much more rapid rate than ever before and this is what makes Shegul so exciting — it’s not just about a stellar collection or a new line; it’s part of a larger moment in plus size fashion.

Often cast aside and located in a dark corner of discount retailers or department stores, plus size customers are demanding the same types of products and clothing that their straight size counterparts automatically have. It’s not just about more bright, colorful, bodycon fast fashion at the mall: It’s about giving plus size women choice and quality. True fashion inclusiveness means more options all around.

While many plus size babes are used to being given a token few designs or a single rack at a straight size store, Shegul stands out by being endlessly devoted to customer experience and satisfaction and ethical production. "We know our customer! We are our customer and we listen to you to ensure you are our happy customer too. We believe in providing high quality designs in the latest styles to you, but not at the expense of poorer women and children around the developing world," the site reads.

I want to be able to shop outside the department store or mall shop and support designers making quality, thoughtful pieces without having to ask for them to be made custom or heavily altered. Thanks to brands like Shegul, this is becoming a reality and we’re beginning to get our own breed of designers who understand what plus size customers want, need, and deserve.
