3 Ways to Get More Money for Your Junky Vehicle

Experts say your car drops in value as soon as you drive it off the lot – and the vehicle you’re hoping to get rid of is many years past that. When the Kelley Blue Book is saying your car is hardly worth the gas it’ll take to drive it to the used car lot, you have to wonder if it’s worth bothering to sell that way. At the same time, you need as much cash as you can get to afford a newer vehicle. Regardless of the condition of your car, you can get more money for it than you might think. It doesn’t even have to be in working order if you know where to sell it.

A used car lot may not be interested in your junk car. Selling a used car yourself directly to a buyer is risky and unlikely to bring in the most cash possible. Plus, you might have to deal with an unhappy buyer demanding a refund if your vehicle is found to be in subpar condition. Don’t waste the time trying to get it in working order only to increase the chances you’ll be able to sell it. Sell it as is and walk away with the cash you need as soon as today.

Sell It to a Salvage Yard

The parts in your vehicle may be worth more than the car itself, especially if it’s barely working. Arrange for a salvage yard to tow your vehicle to their lot and pay you by the net ton regardless of the vehicle’s working order. It requires almost no effort on your part, and you’re guaranteed the most money possible for your car. You don’t even have to get the car in working order to sell it this way.

Sell the Parts

If you’re interested in refurbishing the vehicle and keeping the frame, sell just the working parts inside. Even if they’re not all in the best condition, a salvage yard is likely to be interested in taking at least a few of them off of your hands. You could try removing the parts individually if you know what you’re doing, but selling parts online or via classified is time-consuming and unlikely to result in as much money as a salvage yard can offer you.

Rebuild the Car

If you hope to get more use out of the vehicle, consider fixing it up. Even if you’re ready to sell it and move on to the next car, you’ll get more for it if it’s in good working order. This is definitely worth looking into if you enjoy building cars and if your car is a classic likely to attract a lot of buyers. Head to a salvage yard and look for all of the parts you need. Quality yards sell only parts that are in good working order, and the parts are a fraction of the cost of what they’d be if you ordered them from a dealer or paid a mechanic to order them. You can even hire a mechanic to fix the car if you lack the skills or interest, but you’ll save by providing the parts yourself. Save on the parts, and you’ll pocket more when you do eventually sell the working car.

Your vehicle may be in poor condition now, but it gave you many good years of quality driving. Resist the temptation to junk it or to take a paltry payout from a buyer who doesn’t know the real value of the car. Get the most for your vehicle by selling it for parts.
