Cotton duck (from the Dutch word doek, that means linen cloth) or duck canvas is a heavy plain-woven cotton fabric. Despite its name, this fabric bears no connection to any birds! They are one of the most versatile fabrics to be used in the industry. They are available in many colors like tan, browns, grays, green etc., which make them as the ideal material for work clothes. However, today many new colors and prints have been added to the fabric and it can be used in home décor.

Classification:

Cotton Duck Canvas is classified based on its weight using a numerical system. If a piece of 36×22 inches of the fabric weighs more than 19 oz, it is graded as naught duck, and is the heaviest. Moreover, if the piece weighs 11 oz, it is numbered as No 8. Numbered duck fabric is made in weights ranging from 1 to 12. Lighter fabrics have higher numbering.

Applications:

Cotton duck fabric is mainly a utility fabric, which is very sturdy and a heavy material. This fabric finds large applications in form of duvet cover, cushion cover, and pillow covers. This fabric is widely used for sneakers, sandbags, camping gear, tents, backpacks, upholstery, sacks, duffel bags and much more. Lighter grades of this cloth are also used for making work clothes, shower curtains, etc. Apart from these regular usages, the cotton duck fabric is also used to make the artist canvas on which beautiful imaginations are carved out. So, whenever you see any canvas board painted and hung in your house or exaggerating the look of your interior, then it is only made up of the cotton duck fabric.

This fabric, in higher grades, is water resistant to a large extent, and maintains its durability even after frequent washes.

Due to the sturdy nature of this fabric, it is highly resistant to snagging and tearing. The same property also makes the fabric resistant to fire, however it is still flammable. Small sparks will not affect the fabric unlike the synthetic nylons, which are singed even by a small spark or high temperatures.
