Health insurance is not only about people who are unhealthy; in fact, even healthy people need health insurance. Illness or accidents might happen at any instant, and of course, there is no prior intimation that one would get prior to any unfortunate circumstances. So, this makes it more important to have the right healthcare insurance coverage plan for those unfortunate times. It is recommended that almost everyone should have health insurance.

The primary benefit of having a health insurance is that the insurer is able to plan some of his/her medical costs. People have a misconception that health insurance shall cost them money, but it is high time they realize that not having one can cost them much more money and agony. Some of the major benefits of a health care insurance policy include:

  • Laboratory services: Many leading laboratories that are within the network provider (as per the insurance policy) offer heavy discount or completely free lab tests to the insurer in the hour of need.

  • Hospitalization: Everybody is aware of how getting admitted to a hospital can shell out a huge sum from the patient/family. A healthcare insurance plan can relieve the patient as well as the family from all the burden of expenditure that is incurred throughout the hospital stay.

  • Ambulatory services: Many plans offer ambulatory services for the insurer or the family (depending if it is an individual insurance/ family insurance plan).

  • Maternity and New Born Care: These benefits can really be helpful when a major percentage of the maternity/delivery bills are waived off, wherein, the patient is left with only a meager sum or absolutely nothing to pay.

  • Prescription drugs

  • Emergency services: The insurer is able to avail emergency services from a doctor/ hospital from within the network provider of the insurance plan (at times, services from outside the network may also be availed).

  • Pediatric services

  • Preventive and wellness services which can truly prevent the insurer/family from getting caught by any illness/disease.

In most cases, the insurance company splits the total cost incurred during treatment/preventive services/examination/prescription etc, and typically pays the majority of the amount. All in all, it is important to do a comprehensive research on various health insurance plans available, compare them, and then choose the one that has the widest coverage.
