The History of gifting

Providing Online flower delivery in Pune since two decades, we came to realize that the history of gifting has come a long way as a concept! So, we thought of sharing this little nugget of wisdom with our loving customers. So, what is common between the city of Savannah, the Statue of Liberty and the Taj Mahal? They are all gifts! Yes, you read that right! Acknowledging someone with love through gifts and presents dates back to as far as man can remember. This is because we are all social beings who enjoy each other’s company and share feelings through the gifts that we give. From an expression of true love to showing simple gratitude, giving and expecting gifts is inbred in us.

To understand why gifts are a unique form of expression for us, we need to look at its origin.

The birth of gifting

Gifts are not just for someone we personally adore. Showering with gifts was also considered as a status symbol for clan and tribe leaders as an appreciation for the contribution towards a significant achievement. Gifts generally included nature’s oddities and beauties: an unusual rock, a tree bark, an animal tooth, etc. As tools began to develop, gifts also advanced, like a necklace of animal teeth or a ring of a rock.

By the medieval age, gifts were made to kings in order to win their favour and show allegiance. Today, gifts are given for all occasions and celebrations and is a medium of expressing our love and admiration for each other.

The biggest gift in history

As this culture of gifting grew among individuals, gifts were exchanged between nations as a feeling of solidarity, friendship and peace. Dubbed as the "biggest gift in history", France presented USA with the Statue of Liberty on its 100th anniversary of the declaration of Independance.

The most expensive gift in history

An ivory-white marble mausoleum lies near the southern bank of the Yamuna river. It is of course the "Taj Mahal", epitomizing the true spirit of our gift-giving culture. Shah Jahan built the Taj Mahal for his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal. Costing around INR 32 million (as per present value), it took approximately 20,000 artisans to built it.

Why are gifts given?

Civilizations have appeared and disappeared throughout the space of history, but the culture of gifting had not faded away. Here are some reasons why-

  • Makes us feel special
  • Improves our state of mind
  • Great way to socialize

From the pages of history, we read that the gift-giving culture grew to be firmly established across all nations and timezones. From an act of gratitude, to an established custom to simply an expression of love, giving someone a gift does not require reasons. So explore the joy of gifting because everybody deserves it.

Flowers are the gifts that are considered as a symbol of purity.
