Even though the city of Ahmedabad is the sixth largest in India, and a major commercial hub in the state of Gujarat, with its fair share of contemporary restaurants and buzzing night markets, the city offers its visitors a long and rich history to explore in its many museums, mosques, and its charming old quarter. The city also has notable buildings that were at the centre of India’s independence movement in the 19th and 20th centuries. Here we take you through some of the city’s historical highlights. When you are ready to explore, Brightsun Travel offers direct and cheap flights to Ahmedabad so that you can discover Ahmedabad’s long history during your next trip to India.

The Old Quarter

Ahmedabad is a sprawling metropolis, but despite its rapid development in the last 50 years, the city still offers a charming old quarter to the east of the Sabarmati River, where remnants of its old city wall can be found. Here you could tour the Swaminarayan Temple, one of the area’s oldest temples, and stroll narrow laneways lined with traditional Indian homes or ‘havelis’.

Calico Museum of Textiles

The city has many impressive museums where you can take in Ahmedabad’s long and rich history, such as the Calico Museum of Textiles, which contains a remarkable collection of antique Indian textiles, and explores the city’s position at the centre of India’s textile industry. Textiles on display date back centuries, and include textiles that were used by Mughal rulers in the 15th century.

Hathee Singh Jain Temple

The Hathee Singh Jain Temple is a beautiful decorative temple in Ahmedabad built in the 18th century, boasting intricate stone carvings that showcase traditional Indian skills and craftsmanship. The temple is an immensely peaceful place to spend an afternoon in the city, complete with an adjacent museum explaining the temple’s history and importance in the area.

Sabarmati Ashram

Ahmedabad has important historic buildings to discover, such as the Sabarmati Ashram, which was the headquarters of Mahatma Gandhi, the leader of India’s independence movement in the 19th and 20th centuries. Gandhi lived in the Ashram for 12 years, and a day here would allow you to explore his old living quarters, and enjoy a beautiful spot on the banks of the Sabarmati River.

Jama Masjid Mosque

The Jama Masjid mosque, dating back to the 15th century, is arguably one of India’s most beautiful mosques, located in the old part of the city. The mosque is an amazing piece of Indo-Islamic architecture in Ahmedabad, and definitely worth a visit. The large mosque, built of yellow sandstone, boasts calligraphy lining the walls, and intricate carvings that will transport you back in time.
