The reason is that when they study or search for course material online, they become attracted to social media sites to reduce the boredom of their study activities. This process diverts their attention from academic work. Other adverse academic side effects of social media websites consumption include the following: Reduction in learning as well as research capabilities. Students currently have started relying widely on information accessible cheaply on the social media sites as well as the web. This trend reduces learning as well as research capabilities. Multitasking is another adverse effect. College students get involved in diverse activities on social media while studying at the same time. This process results in the reduction in the focus of their attention. In the end, it leads to the reduction in academic performance as well as the study concentration. The third negative effect is the reduction in human contact. The more the students spend time on social media sites, the less time spends on socializing in person with people. This trend reduces communication skills (Lim & Yang, 2015). They end up not able to communicate as well as socialize effectively with others. This trend is the reason as to why employers continue getting more unsatisfied with communication skills among fresh graduates. The reason is that effective communication is vital to success in the real world. Another effect is that spending time on social media reduces the command and language use as well as writing skills. College students usually use slang or the shortened words forms on the social media sites. They begin relying on computer grammar as well as spelling correction features. This process reduces the command over language and the writing skills. Time wastage is another negative effect of social media on students. College students, when searching as well as studying online, become attracted to using the social media and forget the reason as to why they were using internet. This process wastes time leading to students becoming unable to deliver work in specified period. The other effects include low grades, lack of motivation and negative impact on their health. Contrary, the proper use of social media leads to positive results.

With social media in society, many college students have continued to be obsessed with online personas. College students like spending hours updating their online accounts like Facebook, Twitter as well as Instagram. Loss of focus due to consumption of social media products leads to loss of best contact time with the teacher (Michikyan, Subrahmanyam & Dennis, 2015).This process means that the student will miss the concepts in class that in turn lead to failing in exams. Staying with logged in accounts while lessons are going has a worse impact on learning. Every time one has to look at the trending stories and in the end learning time reduces. College students over share the information to public sometimes can hurt them while in future when they enter the job market. The reason is that deleting of such information is not enough. Cyberbullying also occurs among college student. When this happen it end up affecting students psychologically (THOMPSON & LOUGHEED, 2012). College students who frequently consume online social media products are prone to social isolation. This situation leads to depression as well as decreased social skills that are critical for healthy learning for college students. Addictive social media sites such as pornographic sites can also become dangerous college education. Such addiction reduces learning time to college students. A research at Baylor University found out that female college students spend 10 hours average a day on social media while male students take almost eight hours.

Identity theft also occurs among students if cyber criminals or fellow students use their network to collect personal information that gets posted about people. College students are also easily influenced by what they consume on social media. They can copy behaviors that are not applicable to the media and apply at school. This situation might lead to suspensions as well as expulsion from school. Such action may include drug abuse and violence. Students through social media develop none-research-oriented attributes in learning. They are usually sure that they will not strain to get answers to the academic problems. It also leads to the behavior of copy pasting of educational material amounting to plagiarism. Such characters caused by adoption and overreliance on the social media are adverse on academic performance. Concentration on social media for entertainment also destroys concentration of students on the academics. In the end, it lowers the knowledge level accumulated by the student.

The sites enable students to find others having similar interests which creates an educational relationship and get to learn from one another. Social media consumption allows for creativity by use of tools like blogging as well as messaging in posting ideas and stories. Academic event invitations can well get done rather than mail invitations. Students can discuss the educational topics across the world. Use of social media among college students helps to improve their technological skills and exposes students to diverse views. It also helps them to develop communication skills. It allows them to learn cultures from other users in the world. Also, students utilize social media in discussing homework topics with their peers to get assistance on assignments. More than Sixty percent of college students on social media reveal talking on education while 50 percent mainly speak on school assignments. These college students seem to pose a unique set of the traditional as well as 21st-century abilities like communication, collaboration, creativity, leadership skills as well as technology proficiency. Parents continue to expect schools to use online social media in educating children through in a secure way. Many colleges have created secure social networks for the student to communicate with fellow students.

To conclude, social media as a platform plays different roles among people. Usually social media in itself has no negative or positive effects on either student or other person. Positivity or negativity often comes from the way one uses the products of social media. To students in colleges, social media can be a very vital tool to harness intellectual capabilities. This assertion is the only attainable if the consumer goes in for the particularly important part and not polluting him with inconsistent behavior. From the philosophical view, the social media can enhance research, communication, discussion as well as academic exploration. It helps in the acquiring knowledge that might be far away or too expensive to acquire on manual approach. If used in these angles, the negative consequence will not be realized. Contrary, the deviation from the objective task leads to a difference in results. The reason as to why the college student falls into traps of negative consequences of social media is that they usually focus on the wrong use. To my opinion, social media have no positive or negative effects on the consumer. Though the positive impacts are much appealing, they come from the user. It depends on the end user. It is the duty of every consumer of social media content especially students to be selective to ensure that they pick what can improve their academic quality. For the society to compete globally, students who are the future of every society need to impress technology by using it positively. If negatively used then the academic consequences are adverse.
