If you’re a business owner, one of the basic requirements you need to do is following the state and local fire safety code. As an added layer of protection, many have equipped their buildings with domestic sprinkler systems. All these efforts gear towards the goal of safekeeping their business, employees, and customers -- and minimising any potential damage.

But despite the presence of extinguishers and other fire protection innovations, misconceptions about fire safety can still cost lives. Here are 11 myths that you should know and be clarified about.

When a fire breaks out, flames cause the most casualties. The main culprit behind fire-related injuries and casualties is actually the smoke -- not the flames. Smoke contains many hazardous by-products (like carbon monoxide) that when inhaled can cause some to choke and become unconscious.

All fire extinguishers are the same. No, they’re not -- and each type caters to certain types of fires. Water fire extinguishers can be used to water down fires that involve wood, paper, and textiles. Powder fire extinguishers can meanwhile be used for electrical fires.

Fire alarms and smoke detectors are enough. These gadgets only notify you in case a fire breaks out -- they don’t have the capabilities to control or suppress the fire itself. Extinguishers and domestic sprinkler systems are the most reliable forms of fire protection.

Sprinkler heads simultaneously go off. Many fire sprinkler companies hear about this misconception -- but fret not, because the heads are designed to activate individually (usually when they sense a hot temperature above 155°.

The system may accidentally go off. There’s actually a slim chance for this to happen -- about 1 in 16 million. As said, each system undergoes rigid inspection prior to installation. They should adhere to national standards or they’d be considered defective.

Sprinkler heads leak. Before they’re installed, heads are thoroughly tested first under high pressure. And as an added measure, fire sprinkler companies recommend business owners to conduct regular inspections once they got their building equipped with a sprinkler system.

Water damage caused by sprinklers can cost more than fire damage. Something exposed to water is logically more repairable than something that has already been burnt to ashes.

They shouldn’t be placed near electrical equipment. Electronics should be kept safe from water right? But even if they’ve been exposed to water from your sprinkler system, they can still be cleaned, rinsed, and deionised.

Sprinkler systems are quite expensive. Ensuring your employees’ and customers’ safety should be a top concern among business owners. And no amount of money can equal their lives. But apart from this responsibility, you’ll be surprised to know that they’re not that costly and you can find ways in which you can reduce the expenses (e.g. Through your insurance policy).

They are not efficient life-savers. Domestic sprinkler systems don’t just protect properties, they are more importantly designed to protect lives. Experts estimate that this type of system, combined with early warning devices, can reduce casualties, injuries, and property damage by 50%.

They assure 100% protection. While it can protect you from fire, a sprinkler system alone won’t be able to save the day. As a business owner, you must have a plan and must conduct proper training for employees about fire protection.
