CCNA or Cisco Certified Network Associate is one who has appeared for and passed the CCNA routing and switching certification, by virtue of which a person is deemed qualified to install any small or medium enterprise branch network, operate it and troubleshoot any problems that arise. The teaching points of this certification include:

  • WAN connection facilitation and technologies associated,
  • Implementation of network security,
  • Different network types and media,
  • Fundamentals of routing and switching,
  • OSI and TCP/IP models,
  • IP addressing, determination of IP routes and managing IP traffic,
  • Configuring and operating associated IOS devices,
  • Facilitating switched network extension with VLANs and
  • Establishment of P2P connections.

Passing the exam

In order to pass this proprietary exam from CISCO, one has to undergo the training methods and classroom courses as offered by CISCO or any of its associated learning partners. In fact one wishing to obtain the CCNA routing and switching certification must achieve either:

  • A passing score of #200-125 in the composite exam held by Cisco or
  • A combined score of #100-105 in ICND1 and #200-105 in ICND2 to pass the exam.

After passing, the candidate is awarded the score report, a breakout of the score section wise and also the passing score.

The biggest advantage of this exam is that there are no pre-requisites to getting enrolled for the training and classroom courses or for sitting for the exam. The certification is, however, valid only for 3 years and needs to be renewed after every 3 years. This can be done by the candidate by either:

  • Registering for an passing the same level of the certification or
  • Registering for a higher level of the CCNA routing and switching certification and passing the same.

Preparing for the certification

In order to achieve success in this certification exam, the candidates would have to follow a learning path. Since there are 2 exams which essentially need to be passed, mapping a learning path with the topics and the courses involved, helps to:

  • Understand the basic concepts of networking including the ideologies associated with routing and switching,
  • Configuration, verification and trouble shooting of technologies and networks associated with both LAN and WAN and
  • Preparing for the final CCNA routing and switching certification.

Need for the certification

With technological advances in the field of Science and Information technology, it has become necessary for all enterprises big and small to be in sync with the same. Hence today people are looking for updated technologies which can automatically upgraded to deal with the latest advances made in this field. This constant and continuous evolution has resulted in quite a few changes in the role of the core network engineer and he needs be much more skilled to be able to address the network issues.

The CCNA routing and switching certification helps to prepare them for this transition in networking by strengthening their basics of networking and also ensuring that they have the necessary skill set to deal with the ever-changing needs of the next generation technologies.
