The human body is equipped with the central nervous system. Nerves deliver sensory information to the brain that, in turn, sends signals to let individuals take action to avoid harm or dangerous situations. There are temporary situations such as when a person stubs his toe. Then there are chronic, situations that generate pain on a continuing basis on a scale ranging from moderate to severe due to temporary or permanent situations. In case of acute permanent pain the nociceptors in the brain become overload and make a person more sensitive to pain.

Common analgesics take care of temporary pain. In case of acute or chronic conditions doctor’s resort to prescribing opiates. Opiates work on the brain’s endorphin receptor centers in the brain and spinal cord and reduce pain messages to the brain. This results in the patient feeling reduced pain. While opioids are excellent at giving relief, they also come with side effects, one of which is that the brain reduces the production of endorphins, which are natural painkillers. This, in turn, leads to dependence on the opioid and the need for increasing dosage. Opioid drugs can also confuse the brain’s working. Withdrawal symptoms arise and it could possibly lead to addiction. Then there are other harmful physical side effects too. Stopping the use of opioids will result in the brain reverting to normal production of endorphins.

Even with these known drawbacks opioid drugs like Tapentadol are effective in the short and medium long term treatment of severe or mild chronic pain or pain caused by accidents and surgeries. Tapentadol is a synthetic drug and it is helpful in pain treatment and pain management. Tapentadol works in two ways. It works on the mu receptors in the brain resulting in less feeling of pain. It also works by inhibiting reuptake of serotonin and norepinephrine. These two chemicals are closely responsible for responsiveness. Tapentadol is preferred over other similar opioid drugs because it has less opioid content and works on two fronts to reduce pain and also give a feeling of well being, so important for patients who may become depressed or develop anxieties.

In order to manage pain effectively Tapentadol must be present in the blood stream and cross the blood-brain barrier to keep the sensation of pain at a low point. The effective recommended maximum dosage is 400 mg per day. This dose may be split into 100 mg tablets to be consumed four times a day at the most. Then there are extended release tablets of Tapentadol that must be consumed whole without breaking the outer barrier layer and this slow release keeps the brain supplied with medication throughout the day. This type of treatment is followed after surgery or in cases of arthritis and fibromyalgia. Also, in case of acute traumatic pain where a person must be sedated immediately there are fast release tablets that show effects within an hour or less. Doctors will continue with the treatment only for short or medium duration and then gradually stop the dosage in order to avoid side effects and prevent the body from developing resistance as well as dependence.
