When you fancy hitting heading out in the mountains for some winter fun, why not consider one of the fantastic family adventure holidays to the Rocky Mountains around Breckenridge and Vail? There is plenty of fun to be had!

Officially founded in 1859, a quirky fact about Breckenridge is that it was named after a former vice president, in order to increase their chances of getting a post office! Today it brings together the charm of small town living with a picturesque location in the mountains. Family adventure holidays to this area are guaranteed to be full of active pursuits like skiing, snowshoeing, tobogganing and more.

Skiing

One of the most rewarding ways to enjoy family adventure holidays in the mountains in the winter is to go skiing, of course. Breckenridge covers over 2,908 acres, which spans five peaks with runs rated from beginner (that even the most novice skiers can handle) right up to double black diamonds. You can climb aboard the highest ski lift in North America head out to hit the trails, or, if you or your family are less than steady on your skis, Breckenridge ski resort area offers a variety ski schools aimed at all skill levels. You can even take the time to learn how to snowboard to take advantage of the excellent terrain park in the area. There is also a host of fantastic off piste routes to explore, and this adventurous activity can easily be undertaken with with experienced guides.

Snowshoeing

For something a bit different to try, that still gets everyone into the great outdoors, snowshoeing is an active and fun sport that everyone can take part in. Snowshoes strap onto your existing shoes, allowing you to traverse across deep snow without falling over – most of the time! Originally used by hunters and trappers who needed to get across the snow, today it is an invigorating way to explore and get closer to nature. The Breckenridge Nordic Centre, located just a half mile from the main street of the town, is an excellent resource in the area to get you started snowshoeing. With twenty kilometres of groomed trails to get out and explore, a cosy lodge to return to and the chance to get some great views and maybe even see a bit of wildlife, a day spent off the slopes and in the woods is a worthwhile trade.

Tobogganing

If you have younger children along, tobogganing is an excellent way to make them feel included in the fun without the challenges of some of the more extreme activities you might try on your family adventure holidays. Once used to help move goods, toboggans are now mostly used for recreation, and with several locations in Breckenridge set aside exclusively for this activity, there's no excuse not to take advantage of them. While it may not offer the same thrills of the sheer drops of the double diamond runs, it's certainly fast and it's definitely fun!
