Monel 400 Forged Fittings: Move Your Industrial Processes One Step Closer To Perfection

Author: Rajendra Mehta

Monel tube, pipes, and forged fittings are used extensively in many workflow processes in industrial sectors like petrochemical, refinery, food, chemical, etc. They have certain unique and highly advantageous properties that make them a preferred choice.

Various forms of Monel 400 forged fittings

Monel forged fittings are used extensively in various industrial processes across industrial sectors. They are manufactured, supplied and sold in various forms including the dug screw threaded elbow, the screwed and threaded equal tees, unequal tees, equal cross, unequal cross, full/half coupling, plug, cap, bushing, hex nipples, welding boss, street elbows, swage nipples, unions etc.

Composition of Monel 400 forged fittings and alloy

The Monel 400 forged fittings are made up of Monel 400 alloy. The alloy has additions of various kinds of metals that are mixed in order to provide the fittings adequate strength and better corrosion resistance. The alloy contains 63% of nickel, 28 to 34 % of copper, 2.5 % of iron, 2 % of manganese, 0.5% of silicon,.3% of carbon and 0.024% of sulfur.

Mechanical properties of Monel 400 alloy fittings

The alloy offers excellent mechanical properties even at sub-zero temperatures which make the alloy a better material for being molded as forged fittings that are used in a variety of industrial processes. The hardness and strength of the alloy can be increased without impairing its resistance to impact and its ductility. The alloy fittings do not become brittle even when they are at the liquid hydrogen temperatures. Many other alloys do have increased strength but become extremely brittle at low temperatures.

Strength

The 400 alloy and its forged fittings show exceptional strength properties and have adequate torsional, compressive, shear, bearing, impact and fatigue strength. Monel 400 is known for its toughness and there is no impact on the torsion even if the material completely fractures. The alloy does not get brittle even at low temperatures. The alloy is also not directionally dependent and ahs negligible anisotropy.

Rupture and creep properties

The copper-nickel alloy has been found to be useful up to a temperature of 1000 degree Fahrenheit for the industrial environments that are oxidizing in nature. If the alloy is being used in a reducing environment, then there is a requirement of higher temperature.

Resistance to corrosion

The 400 alloy and its forged fittings show resistance to almost kinds of corrosion including marine corrosion. The alloy has got better resistance to corrosion caused by oxidizing materials and media than many other kinds of alloys. The alloy is resistant to pittance, crevice and stress corrosion and is also resistant to corrosion that is caused by the chloride-ion filled sea water. The alloy is also resistant to the corrosion caused by hydrofluoric acid and hence is commonly used as a kind of engineering alloy.

Instruction on alloy work

The alloy can be easily fabricated and joined. The useful mechanical properties of the alloy can be further enhanced and made more advantageous by using thermal cold and hot treatments.
