The Indian software industry, which was almost non-existent till late 1980s, grew at tremendous pace after early 1990s. The Indian software industry's export was about US$128 million in 1990-91 and grew to US$485 millions in 1994-95. By 2003-04 the software exports had increased to US$ 12.2 billion. The progress in this field is still going.During the year 2010-11 the production of computer software and services is estimated to be US$ 74.89 billion registering in growth of 11 percent over the year 2009-10 when the total production of computer software was estimated to be US$ 64.95 billion. India’s enterprise software market is forecast to maintain its strong performance, with an estimated compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 13.6 percent from 2009 to 2016, the third highest growth rate in the world, according to Gartner.

India is most likely to become the software superpower of the world by 2020, provided the country's infrastructure and soft skill development is completed as per plans and India continues to maintain its competitive advantage. Gartner's Distinguished Analyst Regional Research Director (India) Partha Iyengar told PTI. In 2012, India will be the fourth largest enterprise software market in Asia/Pacific. The country is forecast to account for 11 percent of the region’s total revenue of $29.33 billion USD for Asia/Pacific this year, the equivalent to 1.15 percent of the total worldwide software of market share of $280 billion USD billion. Overall growth of the software 500 companies is up 17% from the past year, with 85% of companies reporting positive revenue growth versus 72% in last year’s survey, according to findings of the 2012 Software 500 ranking of the world’s largest software and services companies, now in its 30th year.

According to an estimate there are 20,000 big and small software companies in India, working day and night. And almost 2.5 million employees work in them. With a population of over 1 billion and ever expanding army of highly skilled computer science and English graduates, India has unmatched potential in the human resources department even exceeding China in this area. It is estimated that most of the Indian students prefer computer and software degrees and diplomas. And want to be a part of an IT company.
