Relocation is a tiresome process involving a lot of tasks to be completed within a specified time frame. Each task has its own problems for you to face. In that if you have a toddler to take care of, you have to face manifold problems. It is always easier if you have a family or friend who can take care of the baby for a day or two, with whom the baby is comfortable to stay. But, for most of us, it is not a practical solution. So we have to manage the task at hand with the baby in tow. But do not worry if you follow this guide book, your problems will be minimised.
- Firstly remember that you have to pack separately for the tiny tot. The baby will be in its wonderland and will not disturb you, provided her needs are addressed properly. So you must start thinking from her point of view, about her comfort. And only comfort is not enough, she needs to be entertained too!
- Tell her about your upcoming move; get her prepared for this new phase. Not only that, make her excited about the entire process. If she feels that you are not happy about the development, she will take the cue and will become anxious.
- Remember that the baby has its own intelligence and understands what you are telling her, they are very perceptive and she tries her level best to follow. So, keep her involved. Create a fun map in her head about the new room, house, locality and friends.
- Keep her involved in the process as well. Let her understand the process, what is going to happen and how. Even you can let her pack some of her things as well, like her soft toys. Let her help to label it as well! She will love to play an adult.
- Make a separate survival kit for her. It should contain her favourite food, drinks, water bottle, comforter, diaper, baby soap, etc. You must have a reserve of clothes as well. You may need them anytime and may not have time to search them, so keep them handy.
- You should stock food for a few days, before and after your move, that does not need much cooking or dishes to make and are easy to digest. Similarly, have a reserve of snacks also to fill and comfort them when you feel they are irritated.
- Children’s room should be the last room to pack. Leave their room untouched till the end and let them have the comfort of their comfort zone till the very last minute. Let them play and keep them engaged in their own room away from the pandemonium outside. This will also make your life easier.
- Also, their things should be the last thing loaded on the truck. Else, carry them with you so that you can get their room ready as soon as possible. This is the very first work you should do to make your kid comfortable.
- And take care to make it an exact replica of the previous room. Babies take some time to adjust to their new surroundings. Do not provide more anxiety by having to fiddle with new arrangements. Here again, keep her involved by allowing her to unpack some of her things, especially the ones she has packed! They will feel in good mood as they will have their room ready and as they know it. Start rearrangements that will make their room better, only after they know the new house properly.
- Ask the help of family and friends. The little one wants to help you in every way she can, and you are not going to love her ideas of helping. You can keep her involved for some time, but it’s always better if you can ask someone to keep her entertained and comforted. At least hire a babysitter for this day. Also keep her engaged with toys and crayons or with other games.
- Make her first night in the new house special. Make her feel this is a special event, and she is the most precious to you. This feeling is very important as otherwise they tend to feel insecure. Spend time with her instead of unpacking all night. Give a party, may be with a little ice cream or chocolate. They do not ask much, just keep them happy and make them feel wanted.
- And stick to the routine about meal and bedtime as fast as possible. Lack of discipline makes them irritable and uncomfortable. That is difficult for you as well. So, follow your pattern.
These simple steps will help you to keep your toddler in good mood and she will love to be in the new place.
