Discover the Incredible Amalfi Coast

Author: Lisa Jeeves

The Amalfi Coast is arguably one of the most spectacular coastlines in Europe. With tiny villages nestled into dramatic, rugged cliffs, endless terraces of vines, olives and citrus fruit trees, and winding roads full of hairpin bends leading down to glittering waters, it is no surprise people flock to this area to marvel at its incredible beauty. The colours reflect off the water and everywhere the landscape is breath taking and awesome in equal measure.

The region is much written about and its magical allure has drawn people for centuries. In times gone by, the rich and famous visited, artists were inspired, and many influential people built villas in Amalfi and the surrounding area. Today this region remains one of the most affluent in Italy.

If you wish to visit this region you could choose to stay in one of the many beautiful villas in Amalfi itself, from where you are in a great position to explore the best of the surrounding area. Villas in Amalfi can be rented from reputable travel companies and are hand selected for their style, design, comfort and standard of accommodation. The town itself is right on the seafront and is a busy but quaint place full of Italian charm and a warm friendly atmosphere. Most villas in Amalfi boast wonderful sea views and many offer a private outdoor area where you can sit, relax, enjoy a glass of wine and revel in your own little piece of Italian sunshine.

Exploring the region

Public buses are easy to use and offer easy access to all the other main towns in the region. Visit Positano, made famous by the romantic poets and artists of times gone by, and fall in love with it like so many have before you. The cobbled streets are lined with exclusive boutiques and vibrant cafes where you can taste some of the many delicious Italian specialties.

Ravello is another must see in the area, well known for the theatrical gardens of Villa Ruffolo. If you are visiting in the summer, make sure you book into one of the outdoor performances in the town and experience a theatrical spectacle like no other. Set high on a hill, the town, with its ancient churches and tiny alleyways, also has hypnotizing views over the coastline and the distant island of Capri.

Although white sandy beaches are not synonymous with this type of rugged coastline, there are some great beach options, both in the well-known resorts and further out. You can also enjoy some time on the water by jumping on a boat to Capri or one of the other little islands off the coast. Seeing the coast from a boat on the water gives you a real impression of the dramatic nature of this famous coastline.

Stay in one of the spectacular villas in Amalfi and explore the area in your own time, while getting off the beaten track and immersing yourself in the exciting atmosphere of this beautiful region. The people are friendly and helpful and buses are frequent and easy to use. Indulge in the local Italian cuisine, wander the colorful local markets, head into Naples for some city sightseeing, and discover some of the world’s most incredible archeology in Pompeii. No matter how you decide to spend your time, you are bound to return home with some wonderful memories.
