Amalfi – Your Top Questions Answered

Author: Lisa Jeeves

You've no doubt been attracted by the photographs you’ve seen of the accommodation and landscape of Amalfi; villas in this spectacular region are first class and an ideal base from which to explore, but if you still have some questions you may find the answers below.

Where is it?

It is a beautiful bay and coastal area that sits between Naples (Napoli) and Sorrento in southern Italy. Arguably the best-known coastal region of the country, it has long been famed for its rugged beauty, beaches and picturesque towns, making this area extremely popular with discerning holidaymakers from Italy and around the world. Note that a lengthy stretch of the coastal area is often referred to as “The Amalfi Coast”, but this should not be confused with the town itself.

What is the history?

When people speak of the great post-Roman Italian maritime republics they tend to think of Pisa, Genoa and Venice. However, between the 9th and 13th centuries, Amalfi was one of that elite club and a rich, powerful and influential trading city. It declined for a number of reasons but remained well-known for the quality of some of its food and paper products. Today, the town is best known for its incredible architecture, marvellous setting and tourism.

What’s a holiday like here?

Of course, different visitors will be looking for different things in Amalfi. Villas are plentiful here and are available right across the spectrum - from good to super-luxury.

If you like sun, sea and beaches you will truly be in heaven! If you enjoy mountains and walking, that’s available just outside of the town centre, too. There is also a wealth of historic sites to visit in the town, including the cathedral, cloisters and the arsenal.

In spring, summer and autumn, typically this part of Italy is warm to hot and you should be guaranteed good weather. As you might expect, in the very peak season it can be very hot and that’s something to take into account when selecting Amalfi villas.

Does it get crowded?

It may do – at least in the peak summer holiday season; although that is true of just about any Mediterranean holiday destination.

Is there public transport?

Yes, buses run to other towns along the coast. In peak season they may, understandably, be busy. Note that ‘orderly queuing’ is something of an alien concept to Italians where public transport is concerned, so if you’re polite and linger at the back you may never actually get aboard!

What is the local cuisine like?

In a word: superb! Some argue that the Italians smile indulgently when the French claim to have the world’s best cuisine, and you may understand why when you eat in this area.Pasta dishes, fish, shellfish and local inland dishes using fresh local ingredients are incredibly delicious – however, they might be a challenge if you’re weight watching!

Are the beaches free?

Throughout Italy beaches may be either public or private. Some charges might be incurred but they’re usually relatively modest in the scheme of things and may help to provide excellent facilities. In Amalfi, villas to rent may or may not have private pools - that depends upon your preferences and budget.
