A Fifties Swing Dress Is A Potent Way to Outdo Others at A Party

Author: Louise Thomas

The modern swing dress is an update of the swing dresses from the 1940s and 1950s, which were popular with ladies who used to go out dancing. These fitted dresses that swirled out at the waist enabled ladies to move freely and flash a bit of leg, which attracted the men! These days they are used for similar reasons - with many modern boutiques providing them to ladies who want to make a great impression on a night out.

Swing dresses are vintage in origin but have been updated to fit in with the tastes of fashion orientated ladies today. A swing dress usually extends down to the knee, with the skirt flaring out from the waist band. The result of this wide skirt design means that when a girl moves about on the dance floor, the skirt swirls with her, and this is lovely to watch. When the swing dress was first designed back in the 1940s, there wasn't much cloth available due to the rationing put in place during the War, and so the skirts were not quite so full. However, in the 1950s when the War was over, the rationing was stopped and more cloth was available and so the skirts became much fuller.

In the 1940s, ladies tended to pair their swing dresses with stockings or seamed tights, and medium-heeled shoes. Whereas the fifties dress tended to be worn with bobby socks and flat shoes.
