Senior Care: Accepting & Getting Comfortable with It

Author: Chris Gayle

Depending on others for even basic day-to-day activities could be overwhelming for anyone; this often result in a defensive behavior where the care recipient resists the change and finds it hard to get acclimatize to this new situation. When the change is inevitable, accepting it is the best option, though it is generally perceived as the end of independent living and invasion of privacy. On the contrary, senior care such as in-home senior care allows elders to continue living an enriched life at home and improve their quality of life in the later years as well. Some helpful tips that could make you accept & ease into senior care are briefly discussed below.

Acknowledge

The first step towards accepting outside help is to acknowledge the fact that there are certain areas of your life that require help. You may need help with bathing, toileting, making meals, etc; or, you have started to find maintenance of house difficult, housekeeping has become nearly non-existent, you are avoiding driving as your eyesight has gotten worse, etc. These problems indicate that there is a need for external help. In-home senior care in Montclair and Hasbrouck Heights, NJ, help elders with the aforementioned activities of daily living (ADLs) and instrumental ADLs so that they could enjoy living independently at home rather than being shifted to an assisted living facility.

Don't Blame Yourself

As soon as seniors understand that the need for senior care is imminent, they mostly blame themselves for the inability to perform ADLs on their own. It is absolutely normal to be sad, angry, feeling dejected, ashamed, etc. as you go through this process. However, it must be understood that age catches up with all of us and after a point everyone needs help with some of the ADLs. It's a part of ageing and our focus should be more on ageing well.

Look for the Silver Lining

When you are overwhelmed with the changes in your life, looking for positives is not that easy. However, there are many advantages of using senior care. Help with housekeeping, meal preparation, laundry, etc. not only will make your life easier but provide you more time to concentrate on a hobby. If you have a problem with driving, then incidental transportation will allow you to visit a local senior center, join different groups, engage in civic group activities, etc., all of which will help you in improving your social life. It's imperative to understand that senior care adds more value to your life rather than taking away your independence.
