Golden Rules of Car Insurance

There are eight things you can do to be sure you get, and keep, the best plan possible. I will give you tips on how to apply for coverage, as well as what to do to make sure you are covered in an accident.

  1. Know what you want beforehand. To make the most informed buying decision, you need to know what options are available to you. When you apply for a plan, you should have a clear understanding of the difference between liability and comprehension. You can call a local insurance broker or agent to assist you, or you can use an online service that will let you compare several plan samples.
  2. Be ready when you fill out your application. You need to be able to answer some general questions about yourself, and your driving history. You will need your social security number, as well as your driver's license number. You will also need this information for anyone else residing in your household.
  3. Don't wait too long to begin your plan. Insurance premiums change at different times, and your quoted price could change if you finally decide to begin your plan months after you were quoted. When you do find a good rate, take advantage of that time to lock it in for the next year.
  4. Compare what different companies have to offer. There are online brokers available who provide auto insurance quote comparisons free of charge. They are simple and quick, and you don't talk to an agent until you are ready.
  5. Explore all of your coverage options. Really assess your needs. Yes, you only have to meet your state's required minimum, but you may need more coverage. You can raise your policy's liability limit, and add comprehensive and/or collision coverage. Comprehensive coverage will insure your car against things like weather damage, thieves, and accidents involving animals. Collision coverage will compensate you for losses incurred in an accident that was your fault.
  6. Pay your bill on time. This is one of those bills you can't afford to be late on. Most car insurance providers report your name to the local DMV when you no longer have insurance with them. And while some companies have a grace period for late payments, some can start the cancellation and notification process in 24 hours. Driving without insurance, or the ability to show proof of financial responsibility, is illegal. Doing so can result in steep fines, the vehicle being impounded, and/or a license suspension. Oh, and keep your proof of insurance with you at all times, that can be an extra ticket if you get stopped by a policeman.
  7. Stay on top of your insurance provider. If you see a rise in your premiums, ask why. When you see commercials from your provider offering special deals, inquire about them. Have you ever heard the saying, "a closed mouth doesn't get fed?" It applies here, because you won't be made aware of some things unless you ask about them. Don't be afraid to switch providers if you are unhappy, most companies will handle everything for you once you decide to join them.
  8. When an accident happens, handle everything correctly. Be sure to get an accident or incident report from the policy. Exchange phone numbers and insurance information, try to get statements from anyone who witnessed the accident when it happened.

These are the eight golden rules of getting auto insurance. Obey them and you'll find the coverage that suits you, at a price you can afford.
