Holidaying In Ski Season? The Off-Piste World Is Your Oyster
Skiing off-piste is an exciting prospect to many, especially during a busy ski season when runs can feel crowded and even rowdy. It can be hard, however, to take the plunge if you have never done it before, as warnings of avalanches and worst-case scenarios can seem off-putting at times.
Where Do I Start Looking?
If you're a beginner when it comes to off-piste adventures, the resort of Meribel is a thoroughly recommended location to gain some experience. Due to its popularity during the ski season, Meribel’s fresh powder tends to be tracked fairly quickly. On the upside, this is because many of the resort’s off-piste sectors are easily accessible, as they don’t require strenuous hikes to be reached - any knowledgeable mountain guide will be able to find you some fresh powder in less popular areas.
What Is a Good Start For Novices?
An area that is very welcoming to off-piste beginners can be found between the Dent Burgin chairlift and the Loze chairlift: the closer you are to the former, the lower the level of difficulty. Another option is the route beneath the Plan des Mains chairlift that travels to the bottom of Mont du Vallon. In fact, Mont du Vallon boasts of one of the classic off-piste itineraries down the back of the mountain, as well as an enchanting cross-country route that includes a walk through a break in the mountain, providing stunning views.
I Feel Comfortable Now - I Want a Challenge!
Despite its friendliness toward novice off-piste skiers, Meribel also provides much excitement to those with a few runs under their belt. As you come out of the Saulire gondola, if you turn right you will reach the Couloir L’Echelle, better known as the ‘Death Couloir’ to English-speaking visitors. Due to its exceptionally rocky surface and its exposure to the sun, it can prove a tough journey - although very rewarding, for its gorgeous, rugged landscapes.
Another sector best recommended to those with some experience can be found underneath the Olympic chairlift. From here, you can follow various routes through lush trees to the medieval villages of Les Allues and Le Raffort, both of which look like perfect picture postcards during the snowy ski season.
This Sounds Great! I’m Ready for An Adventure
As with all ski holidays, booking in advance is highly recommended, as the ski season sees popular resorts like Meribel booked to capacity. Research a few resorts and itineraries before making up your mind, and make sure that they meet all your needs. With the variety of options on offer, you really can afford to pick and choose your perfect ski holiday.
