Shell Leaves the Arctic - YAY!

Author: Anay Mohite

Yay!! Shell has abandoned its Arctic drilling campaign off

the coast of Alaska. It has spent billions in its exploration

efforts and they have failed to make a significant discovery.

The drilling in the Arctic has been opposed vehemently by many groups

because of the huge environmental risks. But where the

compelling logic of the massive environmental risks seems

not to have gained any traction with Shell the dramatic drop in the

price of oil seems to have gotten through. The collapse in oil prices

since last June, from more than $115 a barrel to less than $50 now,

has called into question the viability of high cost production.

So they've announced they are quitting, saying that the oil and gas

indications are insufficient to compel it to stay and explore more.

"Shell will now cease further exploration activity in offshore Alaska

for the foreseeable future. This decision reflects both the

Burger J well result, the high costs associated with the project,

and the challenging and unpredictable federal regulatory

environment in offshore Alaska," they said.Environmental

groups have long opposed Shell's drilling program.

They have based that on the risk of a spill in the

vulnerable waters of the Arctic, and because of the

potential implications for climate change

Brilliant decision, Shell -one you should have made a
