Riviera Maya and Cozumel island: the scuba diving heaven

Author: Fredrick Durrenmatt

Riviera Maya is one of the best places to be explored because of its white sands, which are longer than 200 kilometers along the Caribbean Sea. You can find there the world’s second-largest coral reef. The Riviera Maya is located on Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula and is not just a sunbathing destination, it is also well known for the eco parks, Mayan ruins and the excellent diving places. During one of the Riviera Maya excursions, you can visit the Chichen Irza Pyramids that were the cultural center of the ancient Maya. The amazing view is offered by the Temple of a Thousand Columns, Kukulcan Pyramid and other such sites and buildings. You will find historical facts about the Chichen Itza from a certified tourist guide and find why the Mayan culture was so advanced. The Chichen Itza site was included in the "New Seven Wonders of the World", from July 2007. You can discover other of the Mayan beauties: Chimuch and Coba. The access to the old Mayan commercial city of Coba is accessible through rough stone and plaster roads. The home of the tallest Mayan pyramid in the Yucatan region, Coba, is surrounded by two large lagoons. You can climb on the Mohoch Mul Pyramid and enjoy the breath taking views of jungle and archeological site. In Chimuch village, you can see how the tortillas are made by the locals and taste some of the dishes offered by the homemade Yucatan buffet.

While in a Riviera Maya holiday, you can take a day or two to explore the beautiful island of Cozumel and get accustomed with the entertainments offered by it. There are so many fun things to do in Cozumel, that you have to make a plan before arriving on the island, to be sure that you do as many activities as you can. If you are interested in Cozumel history take a visit on the Museo de la Isla de Cozumel, and make a clear image about the ancient Maya history, the geography, geology, flora and fauna of the island. If you plan to go underwater, this museum is the perfect place to learn more about coral reefs. After learning about the coral reef go and experience snorkeling and scuba diving at Arrecife Palancar, which offers kilometers of "horseshoe" of coral heads and coral formations. While a snorkel tour you can view the most amazing reefs in Cozumel, the Palancar reef, the Columbia reef and El Cielo. El Cielo is kept secret as a treasure because of its crystal water and sandbar half mile from the shore.

After experiencing the beauties of the water do not forget to visit the San Gervasio ruins, which is a preserved Mayan complex, that is believed to have been the sanctuary of the goddess of fertility Ixchel. The perfect way to enjoy a trip to San Gervasio is by a Jeep, because only in this way you can discover the other hidden Mayan ruins. Riviera Maya and Cozumel are the perfect destination where you can mix relaxation with scuba diving and take a small breath of ancient history.
