Questioning Fashion's Fast Pace, Why Consignment Sites Are Getting VC Funding
Is the fast-paced nature of fashion killing creativity?
In light of Raf Simons's unexpected departure from Dior and Alber Elbaz's 16-minute lament on the fast-paced nature of fashion, many writers have been questioning the demand placed on today's creative directors. According to Vogue's Suzy Menkes, the people who suffer the most from the fashion calendar are ultimately creatives, who just don't have the time to look for inspiration between their hectic schedules and collections. And while younger designers like J.W. Anderson have previously stated in interviews that they "enjoy it," many others are feeling burnt out.
Secondhand fashion marketplaces are all the rage
Fashion consignment sites are booming: Tradesy raised $30 million in January, The RealReal raised $40 million at the end of April and Vestiare Collective raised $37 million in September. According to Bloomberg, it's because they're filling a void left by online retailers like Amazon and Ebay, whose most vulnerable segment might still be fashion.
Paddle8 raises $34 million
And speaking of investments, Paddle8 brought in $34 million in its latest round of funding. Paddle8 allows investors and collectors to sell and purchase jewelry and luxury collectibles, and recently expanded its auction category to include men's and women's vintage fashion, accessories and memorabilia.
Apple expects another holiday record
On Tuesday, Apple predicted that holiday sales will break records, thanks to iPhone 6S upgrades and general sales growth in China. The company didn't disclose last quarter's Apple Watch sales, though analysts estimate the company sold about 3.8 million units.
Anya Hindmarch to expand in the Middle East
With the help of Etoile Group, Anya Hindmarch will now be opening stores and concessions in the Gulf region. The first concession will be located inside luxury concept store Tryano in Abu Dhabi and will debut in November. Anya Hindmarch will also debut her own store in early 2016 in Riyadh.
