Handbook on Granite Tile Installation

Granite has been and still is, one of the popular choices for kitchen countertops. The high cost of materials and installation often leaves homeowners in doubt. Using 12"x12" granite tiles instead of pricey granite slab is a less expensive alternative. They are attractive, durable and eye catching to watch. They are a smarter choice for individuals who do not want to put a dent in their home improvement budget with costly granite installation. Granite tiles are easy to install as they weigh much less than a solid granite top.

Steps to Install Granite Tile

  • Remove the existing countertops. Check whether the cabinets are level measure to cut piece of plywood to serve as the base.
  • With the plywood in position, measure from the cabinet to the edge of the plywood. Drill holes and insert screws to fix the plywood.
  • Then cover the plywood with thick cement backer board. Screw the cement board to the top of the plywood surface.
  • Measure and cut the hole for the sink using a jigsaw.
  • Polish the granite tile edges before installation using a stone polisher designed for stone.
  • Use a tile saw to cut pieces of granite. Then lay them and once the top is complete then you need to install tile edging and backsplash.
  • Apply thin-set to the side of the cement board and position the edge tiles.
  • Fill the narrow seams between the tiles with unsanded grout. Use a rubber padded grout float to force the grout into the seams.
  • Once the grout has dried completely, install the sink, faucet and appliances to complete the job.
