5 Responsive Web Design Advices for a Mobile Friendly Website
2015 ushered a new era for both, the smartphones and the internet users as increased number of people use their phones to browse the internet and always stay connected on the go. Mobile browsing even took over the desktop users for the first time in history. It has been quite a monumental year if I was a smartphone.
The rise in mobile users is correlated to the rise in ecommerce and other startups with emphasis on mobile first. With the advent of responsive web design (RWD) it is easier to shift across devices while maintaining the same usability and interface. The more developers adopted the RWD, the more the rise of mobile prevailed. If you haven’t yet, contact a responsive web design company India or global to make your website mobile friendly and cater to added traffic.
1. Go Mobile Friendly
When opting for RWD, start with designing for mobiles first and then upwards for tablets and desktops: This necessary for the text, media and especially the logo to look aesthetically good without the off-chance of it pixelating. Once you design the website for mobile, the text and the pictures should not have any issues on desktops and tablets.
2. Concentrate on Content
Management and planning of content is always the main focus while making a websites, whether responsive or not. When you build a responsive website, it makes accessing and reading the content easier, irrespective of the devices it is opened on. Try and plot out the content on the basis of how it should appear, even on the narrowest browser width.
3. Leave Navigation Menus Behind
Responsive design does not leave a lot of place for complex or clunky elements. On smaller screens, the screen space is not sufficient to accommodate all the bells and whistles that we see on a desktop site, hence it is always recommended to hide the navigation menu from top.
You can include a drop down menu or you can use the overlay technique which will overlap the entire screen with the menu navigation.
If your web design demands more than one menu, you can combine icon and text and include it in a single menu. Make use of icons to hide the menus.
4. Optimize the Images
The whole idea of RWD is to enable cross-platform browsing across all supported devices. Along with compatibility, the loading speed should also be curated. Using large sized images and other media, will snag down the loading time, especially on mobile’s limited bandwidth. Use universal formats like GIF, JPEG, and PNG-8 and avoid PNG as it will bloat up the image 5-10 times its intended size.
Be very particular with the use of image resolutions and set the dimensions to match. This is done to eliminate scaling and yet preserve the quality of the images. Scaling causes resolution and color depth problems.
5. Readability
It is a bad practice to make the users pinch-to-zoom or making them squint to read the ultra- small font size. You need to realize that the users should be able to read the content clearly on their small mobile screen. A text size of 16px, 1em, or 12pt is recommended.
