Getting In To Holiday Sports on St Lucia

Author: Lisa Jeeves

When you travel to the stunning Caribbean island of St Lucia for a holiday, there is always something to do outdoors soaking up the fresh sea air and sunshine. Whether you want to spend your holiday sunning yourself by the ocean in front of the Cap Maison on the northeastern tip of the island, or are looking for something a bit more active, there is an outdoor activity for you.

The island of St Lucia is in the perfect location to take advantage of the convergence of the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, meaning that if you are into water sports you can get the best of both worlds. The Caribbean Sea near Cap Maison is warmer and generally more gentle as it laps the western shore, while the Atlantic has a bit more of a chill and stronger waves that come from an ocean with power behind it.

Water sports in St Lucia

If the lure of the crystal clear waters on the shores of St Lucia is just too much of a draw, you're in luck with the huge variety of sports that will get you on or in the water. Being based at Cap Maison gives you the option of taking to the waters of the Caribbean or the Atlantic, depending on what you want to do. If you're up for a bit of a challenge and want to try your legs at surfing, head east where the waves are a bit bigger. But, you want to have a more relaxed day in the water, head west and spend an afternoon snorkelling around the rocky shore or rent a kayak and spend the morning exploring. Feeling adventurous? Give kite surfing a go. This sport is exactly what it sounds like: a surf board is attached to a large kite and you allow it to pull you across the waters, while utilising the wind to try nifty tricks and jumps should you so desire. Additionally, St Lucia is the place to go if you want to be on but not in the water. From here, you can spend a day (or a few days) on yachts of all sizes and descriptions.

Golfing on St Lucia

If you like the idea of being near the water while staying at the Cap Maison on the northern side of St Lucia, but do not particularly care to go into or onto it, then why not book a day on the greens? The island boasts an excellent eighteen-hole golf course at the St Lucia Golf and Country Club. The course is a championship level course that stretches between the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic shore, allowing for some stunning golf-course views and an abundance of fresh sea breeze off the water. In addition to being a Par 71, 6,829-yard course, the club also benefits from a 350 yard driving range where you can practice your swing and really get a good warm up before heading out to the links.
