A digital media startup of Sameer Pitalwalla is on the crest of a wave.
Started in the year of 2013, Culture Machine is already making waves in the world of digital video content production. Sameer Pitalwalla, a graduate of the University of Westminster co-founded Culture Machine with Venkat prasad with a simple vision to create engaging digital media company for the internet generation.
Before starting Culture Machine, Sameer headed the digital media for Disney UTV and was an integral part of a team to set up the digital video business at the Times Group.
Culture Machine is a multi-faceted network which uses its unique technology to analyse video viewing trends on social media and video-sharing platforms such as Facebook and YouTube to generate optimum content. With the help of this big data, Sameer helps advertisers and content creators create content that works, content that has the potential to become viral. Their unique tech identifies viewership patterns, popular trends and trending videos to help them create original content that has a higher probability of garnering maximum hits.
Back in 2011, Sameer attended VidCon, which is the annual conference that brings together Online Video Creators, viewers and Industry expert’s from all over the world. That’s where he met his Co Founder Venkat Prasad an ex-Product Manager of YouTube. He worked with Youtube in the US for seven years. The two discovered that they had the same passion’s and vision, they both wanted to create a South Asian media brand and that’s how Culture Machine started.
Sameer Says that due to the technological limitations of TV, digital business will advance. He strongly feels that online video content will be the next big platform. He feels that the digital medium has evolved over the years and now has the capability to have a rich dialogue with its consumers. "The purpose behind building Culture Machine is to create a state of art video productions for brands and consumers by identifying and engaging with the right audience." Says Sameer.
Apart from his revenue earnings that come from the partnership with YouTube. One of the most important revenue sources for the company is coming from their 'big data intelligence.' For Instance, their famous video ad with Havells, "Respect For Women" has generated more than 2 lakh views since the video was released in May 2014. At present, they have signed up with 180 artists and potential stars with their own dedicated YouTube channel. In totality, they run 240 YouTube Channels. Their client list includes big firms like Tata Motors, Myntra, Microsoft, Havells, Star Studios, Fox Star Studios etc.
Sameer feels that App Stores and Video Sharing sites are like the new cable companies. The company has received a Series - A Funding of $3.5 million from a Singapore-based venture capital fund Zodius Capital and recently raised a Series B Funding of $18 million in Jan 2015 from Tiger Global and Zodius Capital. The company estimates that the total size of the market it can tap into is staggering $1 billion in terms of Total TV and spends. Sameer intends to make Culture Machine scale by adding multiple verticals and increasing the size of content creators.
